I've been meaning to write this post for a while, but have been procrastinating for various reasons. One of the most interesting things that I have encountered while in China is crossing the street.

If you are reading this in the States, while sitting on the couch, you may laugh thinking that it is more complected than waiting for the signal to turn. Instead, in China, it's more like the 100m dash. What follows are a few guidelines that have been compiled by the people I've encountered while in China.

1) Wait for a native to begin crossing the street, and cross with them.

Not only safe, but a good way to make friends and practice your Chinese!

2) All signals, traffic or otherwise, are merely suggestions of what should be happening.

I've watched cars run all colors of lights. Taxi's are by far the worst.

3) If it has wheels, it will not stop.

After nearly being crushed by a semi, while proceeding on a walk signal, I sympathize with roadkill. With this being said, I have only seen one car accident while being in China.

4) When in doubt, run... quickly.

5) If there is more than 6'' of room, a bicycle will try and fit through, no matter what.

6) Much like the paint on the concrete showing where the cars are supposed to go, "one way" is just a suggestion. It may be the wrong way.
