Yangshuo
Egg wrapped dumplings - yum! Chris's Section We love Yangshuo. Apart from being a beautiful place, it's got a really cool, relaxed vibe. We've really enjoyed ourselves here so far. Made a few friends in the hostel too. A great bunch of guys. The hostel staff are super friendly. We've definitely gone into holiday mode - getting up late morning/lunch time. Sitting in the bar all evening. Not bad price wise - it's 70p for a massive bottle of local beer so we're not breaking the bank.
Yesterday we went on a chinese cookery course (150 yuan - £15). We started by going around the market which was, erm, interesting to say the least. Slightly off-putting when you can hear dogs barking. I could also see one skinned and hanging up on a spike. Not pleasant. We stayed away from that end of the market. Apart from this the market was really interesting to see.
We then went to the cookery school, which was set in a restaurant overlooking the river. We cooked egg wrapped dumplings (my fave!), steamed chicken with dumplings, aubergine yangshuo style, stir fried pork with veg and green veg with garlic. It was great fun and we got some

Scran time. great tips on chinese cooking. Most of it, ingredients-wise, was really simple. The technique was the bit that made the difference. We then sat down and ate all of the food we made. I'm not mad on aubergine, but it tasted good. The steamed chicken wasn't a favourite, but the rest was amazing. Seriously stuffed by the end. The course was pricey, but we ate lots of food and had a great afternoon so we thought it was well worth it.
The rest of the evening was spent in the hostel bar, drinking, playing pool, chatting and playing beer pong with the locals. A really good evening. We're having a chill out day today as it's raining. Hopefully it will be fine tomorrow as we want to hire bikes and get out into the countryside.
Louise's Section This place is fab!!
Mosquitoes have finally found me so tiger balm is now being used, bloody good stuff. Feeling a little sluggish after losing beer pong last night and having to drink the beer as punishment for losing. The bar girl here called Jayci is mental, her english is so good, she knows all the right phrases for
being pissed off and losing or winning games and she just gets drunk every night with the customers, great job!
The cookery class was good but stressful. The teacher showed you once then you were off but luckily each person remembered a different bit so all the food turned out lovely. The setting was amazing too, we were cooking in front of a huge open window looking out onto the Li River and the karst hills.
So biking hopefully tomorrow then a day to kill before catching the bus back to Guilin and then the hard sleeper train to Hong Kong. Our new friends are leaving today so shall miss them but leaving behind Dan and Serena who have told us loads about the countries we are heading to later so we are much more well informed now and prepared.
10 weeks to go till Gill comes out too, so looking forward to that.
Not much else to report, reading rest of the Lord of the Flies which sits quite well being in amongst this scenery and shall probably have a Sopranos afternoon on the net book again.
Will blog from Hong Kong in a
few days xx
