Ahhh
A nice way to start the morning. But that's not Elephant Trunk Hill.Greetings from Yangshuo! I'm back for a second visit and this time I have a cold. We took the train from Guangzhou at 6pm last night and arrived in Guilin at 630am. The train ride was fairly uneventful. We played games and a lot of people drank beer and then the lights went out at 10pm. I didn't sleep well, which is unusual; normally I sleep well on trains, so my sick self was a bit disappointed--I'd been looking forward to the rest.
We started the day with a Chinese breakfast that most of us didn't like. Rice congee, noodles (with meat), steamed bread, fried bread, sweet cake, warm soy milk, and hard boiled eggs just don't satisfy me in the AM. Even tea would have helped.
Our bus got stuck in the parking lot. What should have been an easy exit took us at least 15 minutes, the end of which was accentuated with horror-film-like screeching noises as we drove up--and nearly into--some trees. I never knew branches on glass could sound like that. When we finally made it out of the parking lot, we broke into applause for our amazing driver, Mo. And then we drove a
Boaters
Lots of boat rides to take on the river! short distance to our next destination, all the while cracking jokes that we could have walked there faster.
We went to Elephant Trunk Hill, which is in a nice park. Upon entry, we were first directed to a scenic rock that we guessed was Elephant Rock, but couldn't figure out why--it certainly didn't resemble an elephant! We were told we could hike up to the top of a big hill and take in the views, too. I walked around a little, looked down the river, saw the
realElephant Trunk Hill, and then opted to sit with some friends and enjoy coffee and sunshine. I don't hike when I'm sick and so tired I'm not sure where I am.
At 920am we boarded the bus again and were on our way to our next destination, to be followed by Yangshuo. A two hour bus ride means I get a two hour nap.
