Surrounding Xiahe are vast areas of grassland used by local nomads as pastures for herds of yak, dzo (bull crossed with female yak), Tibetan cattle, sheep, goats and even pigs. The more famous areas are Sanke (about 13km away), Ganjia (about 34km away) and further away still, Takkar ( famous for its enormous rock formations). Domestic yak are a much smaller breed than in the wild.

Such a funny moment. While wandering around, Haruko suddenly gave a gasp. I looked up to see a yak come charging in our direction. Then we looked the other way and another was charging towards us as well. Then it all became clear, as it was obvious the first was a juvenile. It was a calf and mother relocating each other! Whew!

Ash thoroughly enjoyed her first experience on horseback.

He looked so sad and lonely! The family ended up giving him to Mr Ma for his son. I hope he went to a loving family.

Great pictures! But the yak butter tea sounds disgusting. My niece surely would like it: she loves to eat butter without bread...
