Cantina Del Mar at Outres Beach
Our favorite place at Outres Beach-not easy to get to but worth the drive. The past two days have been quite the adventure! We found a beautfiul beach-Outres Beach-45 minutes from SKV on dirt roads-and worth the drive. Pristine white sand beaches, warm water with waves high enough for me to practice my body surfing, and pretty deserted. We went to Cantina del Mar because they specialize in fish tacos and I have been craving Mexican food. We had fish tacos, then a round of shrimp tacos-so fresh they pop in your mouth. The owner is an American from Santa Barbara named Hurley. He invited us to sit with he and his friends. Quite the group. Papa John, originally from Hawaii, a 70 year old man with a very long beard and very sweet. He owns a bar there too-with the coldest beer on the beach-because he his bar is never open. We also met Jim and Millie Pringle-we ended up giving them a lift back to town as we were staying in the same hotel. Millie is a beautiful Khmer woman who was so gracious and was really into temples having traveled all over the world studying the different architecture. And come to find out, Jim is a former New York Times reporter. He

Of course we went back to the same place the next day. About a dozen Khmer kids had inner tubes tied together and I swam out and asked if I could play with them. A collective yes! So much fun. Steven visited with Hurley while I basked in the sun. We were there until sunset.
Later in the evening we decided to get some pizza. There was Happy Pizza, Happier Pizza, and Ecstatic Pizza. We chose Ecstatic Pizza and sat down. A group of 4 young Americans came in-being rather obnoxious. They sat at a table pretty close to ours and of course here come the street kids trying to get the tourists to buy their wares. I watched as one of the men pretended to throw money in the bushes-then they laughed as the street kids dove in and tried to find the money. The second time it happened I was out of my chair at their

I said we have advantages as Americans that the Khmers will never have. We make more money in one week than most Khmers make in a year. When I turned around another older man was talking to Steven-who was out of his chair as well. He said the American boys worked for him. Steven said he didn't care who they were-and in not so polite terms-do NOT mess with Khmer children. Then Steven and I promptly sat down at our table-fist bump explosion-and continued our dinner. The funny part of the story is the Khmer kids went back to the bad boys and lo and behold-they got out their wallets and the kids wiped them out. HA! I called the oldest boy over and explained that they were bad men-to gather his siblings and GO. When I said "bad men"he knew what that meant and they left immediately. To get an accurate picture-the oldest of the Khmer street kids was around 7, and the youngest was 1 1/2.
We are leaving SKV to go back to Phnom Penh.
