So we left kampot last Friday and got the bus down to the coast town of Sihanoukville where we were spending xmas. It was only about 1 hour on the bus and they dropped us right at our guesthouse, so nice and convenient! Since we were spending xmas here we had booked all our accommodation up in advance as we didnt want to get stuck with no where or somewhere really grotty, was nice knowing where we were staying for a change and not searching round for ages finding somewhere. We were spending 3 nights in a place called Mick and Craigs, nice private room $10 - pretty standard. As soon as we arrived we dumped our bags and walked down to the beach, only 10 minutes away and were completely shocked....there was no beach!!! The sand had all dissapeared under the water and the tide was coming right up to the restaurants and bars, some even had to put all their chairs away as it was splashing over! I was devastated! We walked along which was pretty difficult as you had to go in the sea or go through everyone else's bars and restaurants and a bit further along there
was a little bit more beach, some room for some sun loungers. We spoke to this british guy who ran a restaurant and ever since the typhoon that hit south east asia in early november the sea level has risen and since it had rained a little over the past few days it had kept quite high. Anyway we continued walking all along this huge stretch of beach, it was pretty manic, much more crazy than phu quoc island. Tons and tons of little shacks, bars and restaurants, loads of "beach kids" that just work all day on the beach selling bracelets and pretty annoyingly pushy! Loads of women selling manicures, massages, tell you what its not a great place to improve your confidence the amount of women who come over and tell me how hairy my legs are and that I should get them threaded (where they use cotton to pull our your hairs, which feels just like using tweezers on each and every hair on your leg) then they keep telling ste how long his toe nails are and that they should cut them for him! ahah its sooo annoying though. Anyway, walked along for a few km
and find another beach called Otres beach, bit less manic here, so chilled out for the afternoon in bar with some nice cold drinks and fell asleep on some hammocks! Oh one mad thing, when we were walking along we bumped into a couple from kent who we met way back in Lithuania!!! Crazy! We had kept in touch over facebook but hadn't planned on bumping into them!
That evening we went some for yummy cheap local food, about $3 for a meal each which in this area is pretty good. They had an excellent happy hour too, spirit + mixer for 75cents!! Crazy! So had a few drinks there and then headed down to the beach to check out the beach night life. Its pretty nice, loads of different bars doing all different promotions, sometimes you can get a small cup of beer for 25 cents, thebest deal is probably the bucket cocktails. $3 for mekong whiskey, red bull and coke, we can share one between us and it lasts for ages! had a really good night, ending dancing for ages (even Ste was dancing) met a few nice people. Oh on the beach too they have these
fire shows where a local lad does all the crazy fire throwing spinning things, pretty impressive, bit scary if your too close though!
Saturday we lazed on the beach all afternoon, found some sun loungers had a few drinks and chilled out. That evening was the liverpool game where once again we watched liverpool lose! Bad times, Ste even had his liverpool top on which he was soon regretting! Bumped into the french girls again, they were staying in the guesthouse next door to us, so met up with them for a drink later and had a nice chilled out evening.
Sunday once more lazing around on the beach 😊 we weren't planning on having a late night as we had a boat at 10am the next day so we went straight from the beach to dinner at this indian restaurant, was really good except we managed to attract some complete nutter who basically invited himself to join us at dinner. It was this american guy about 30ish but he was just an idiot and most of his conversations revolved around different women (he had been with/paid for) of different nationalities, not pleasant at all!!! Thankfully he soon
left and we took a stroll home along the beach not sure whether to have one drink or not until we found this really funky bar called the dolphin shack. A young british lad was working for them doing some promotion and persuaded us to come in for a drink...well that was about 9pm and it was 4.30am when we got to bed!!!! not good! well it was good, brilliant night, the french girls turned up, some friends we met on friday turned up, got on with the british lad well too and the drinks were soooo cheap so a cheap night out.
Time to get some sleep before our boat to an Island at 10am!
Lots of love
