We arrived at Sihanouville mid-afternoon and checked into Mick & Craig’s Sanctuary Guesthouse for the price of $7 US per night for double room with en-suite bathroom. After a swift freshen up we headed down the beach in search of the Koh Ru bar after a tip off from H & Gower about a stunning island where they stayed a few years back.
On arrival on the beach we discover that there is actually no beach, just lines of sandbags and bars - the sandbag were protecting the bars. To walk along the front you had to waive in and out of every bar, dodging cries of “you want beer, happy hour”. The problem was T did want beer and at $0.50 US a glass it was hard to keep on walking, but G was on a mission which was two-fold: firstly, locate Bar Ru and secondly was to book on the island.
Just for the record there is no beach at the moment because the recent typhoons have took it away, the sea level has risen up to the bar fronts, very sad, locals say it will take a few months to get back to normal, in the
mean time they have to struggle with not many people walking by.
We discover the bar but it turns out it has a new owner and has nothing to do with the island, T gets his way and we have some beers and observe the craziness that is ‘snookville’ - as its know by the numerous western expats that own the many, many, many bars along the front and we notice these bars sell food such an English breakfast, sausage and mash and English style fish and chips ‘with no bones’ and we’re quite un-prepared for this, it was very reminiscent of Spain’s Costa Del Sol (not that we have been but we have seen enough shows on TV to recognise it!), therefore we named ‘snookville’ Costa Del Cambodia.
After a few dirt cheap beers we headed back to where we came from to find the shop where you now book for Koh Ru. We booked on to the boat to Bamboo Island for the day after as it was fully booked and had to spend another day in Costa Del Cambodia. So we decided on a BNO (big night out) and coincidently this was also Halloween. We
were baffled that people had dressed up in costumes that we can only assume they had planned and brought with them - people had accessories too! But all in all a good night had by us laughing at the weird people!!!
The next day was spent pretty much recovering from the night before, both of us taking it in turns to sleep throughout the day and T finding a place you can view your own choice of movies!!!! Like home from home!!!!
This pretty much sums up our time here in the backpackers black hole, we weren’t that impressed but couldn’t figure out why considering it had, very cheap beer, sea food, sea, sun etc etc!!!
