Beach babe?
Sihanoukville beaches try hard to be like Koh Phan Ngan, but the cattle give it away Mat - Lazy blog and photos:
We headed to Sihanoukville on the south coast of Cambodia for Christmas. Ended up spending six days or so there.
Its hard to relax on the mainland beach because of the persistant kids selling stuff you don't want and lots of beggars, but we headed to Bamboo Island off the coast which was bliss after a couple of days on the mainland.
The comments on the photos should fill you in more. If the videos don't work they will if you head to: http://www.fliqz.com/FliqzWebPublic/Dynamic/proxy.aspx?PID=1723&from=perma
😊
Trace: After Nicki and I arrived in Phnom Penh we headed to Tuol Sleng Museum, aka S21, a primary school that had been taken over by the Khmer Rouge (absolutely NO relation to the Moulin Rouge) in which over 20,000 Cambodians were tortured and murdered during 1975 - 79. Although the vast majority of the victims were Cambodian, the prison population also included members of other nationalities, including Vietnamese, Thai, Pakistani, Laotian, Indian, American, British, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian (as in one or two of each).
Mat arrived the next morning, and we all headed to the killing fields, which were mass graves
of tens of thousands of those murdered during the genocide. As you can imagine, the mood was fairly heavy.
In an attempt to shake off the cloud of dark feeling towards humanity, which seemed a shame so close to Christmas, we headed south towards Cambodia's coast. We stayed a couple of nights at Chiva's Shack (not flash, but very fun and friendly) on Ochheuteal Beach. Loads of pancakes (very important), these ones had the highest chocolate to pancake ratio that Nicki and I had managed to find so far. About 200g of nuttella-type chocolate spread on a yummy fried crepe with banana in the centre. MmmmMMmmmm!
Yes, I am getting fat. It's been a long time coming.
We soon tired of being pestered by kids trying to sell us stuff. You could be in conversation, eating, drinking, sleeping or reading a book and every few seconds (not an exaggeration) you would be asked if you would like some more of the same bracelets that you already have. When you explain that you already have some, they say that it's not fair for you to buy some from their friend and not from them!
There's no way
Give a dog a coin?
You have to give this guy credit. A blind war veteran singing beautifully as his mangy but adorable dog leads him while holding a bucket for money. to win and keep everybody happy.
Anyway, we solved the problem by heading to a deserted island. And I mean desserted! Fried mars bar pancakes!!! You can't get any better than that ... except perhaps if you have a coffee shake (coffee, condensed milk, ice all blended together like a smooth cocktail), a clean, deserted beach and a heap of sun and turquoise water to go along with it.
We stayed for two nights at Bamboo Island, but could easily have stayed more. Instead, we decided to head towards Vietnam and had a lovely trip from Sihanoukville to our border crossing near Chau Doc. Looking out the window of our taxi we frequently passed through villiages with oxen pulling heavily loaded wagons, and people turning freshly harvested rice which they were drying on the side of the red dirt road.
Then it was onwards to Ho Chi Minh aka Saigon for New Years!
