After our brief sojourn in dolphin country its back to the bright lights of Phnom Penh today with another long bus ride.
Up in time for breakfast starting at 06:30. A good spread again this morning but everything is cold including the coffee !!
We check out at 08:30 and after 15mins stood outside the hotel waiting for a remork to pass we give up and walk the ½ mile into town instead. Early but I am still a bit hot and sweaty by the time we get to the spot on the riverfront where we have been the told the passing bus will stop and pick us up. The bus is due at 09:30 but doesn't turn up till nearly 10:00 making us a bit worried. With a cold breakfast, no remork and a late bus it hasn't been a good start to the long day's travelling … fingers crossed for the remainder.
We pass the same scenery as we did coming, obviously, and Jai is asleep for most of the day. When we first got on the bus I said hello to an elderly western couple sat in the seats behind ours. As we drove I could hear snippets
of their well spoken English. Shortly before we arrived in the town of Kompong Cham the lady told the chap something which he mistakenly decided to check in his guidebook and things kicked off. "What's the matter don't you believe me ?", “Of course I believe you, but …”. 10mins of likewise banter before he makes another mistake; “I don't want to talk about this anymore”. The surprisingly from the well spoken lady; “That's your trouble, you never want to f***** talk about anything !!”. Then silence … When we arrive in Kompomg Cham they get off the bus and I chance a “Have a nice stay” as they pass to be rewarded with “Not much f***** chance of that is there !!!”. Hope they had a good time as they entertained me for a while.
It was a long, hot and tiring journey today and when we pull into the bus station in Phnom Penh at 17:00 we are both relieved the journey is over. Take a remork to the hotel and decide to go almost straight back out to eat fearing that if we settle down now we wont want to move again later. Take a remork to the
riverside to eat and then come almost straight back again.
Jai goes up to our room and I try the hotels complimentary internet. It is slow and dated and when I eventually get to sign in to my Hotmail account locks me out … wonderful. I walk up the road a bit for a bottle of water before heading for the room. It is only when I have climbed to the third floor that I realize I don't know what our room number is as Jai keeps the key. I have to return to reception and explain before climbing back up the stairs again.
Room 308, I wont forget that again, is a lot smaller than the room we had first time around. The aircon takes ages to cool the room down and through the night the bathroom makes lots of noise as we seem to be next to the downpipe for everyone else's bathrooms as well.
All in all, not a good day and glad its over …
