Not having to meet Chim until late afternoon I spent the vast majority of the day lazing around Battambang. I grabbed another gorgeous breakfast at Madison’s Pub and then wandered over to the internet café and its video game playing youths. Then since this was a holiday after all, it was back to the hotel for swims and naps. By the time late afternoon rolled around I was refreshed and ready to go. To my surprise it was actually Chim who arrived and not some substitute driver that he had come in his place. I decided he liked these shorter tours as opposed to the all day drives he was used to. This tour would not only include watching the bats fly out of the mountainside at Phnom Sampeau, but a trip to the killing caves ... read more

As I sat by the window eating my breakfast at the hotel café I noticed a Cambodian guy outside excitedly trying to get my attention. I didn’t have the foggiest idea who he was so I looked away and focused on my coffee and eggs. I was feeling rather refreshed from my early night and eager to once again tour the countryside around Battambang with my new pal, Sok. I lingered with my leisurely breakfast, downing the last sip of my coffee before exiting the hotel out to the street. Unfortunately, I did not see Sok anywhere. Maybe he was late? Once again, the guy from the window came trundling toward me. He seemed to be saying that Sok was not going to make it and he would be doing the tour in his place. I ... read more

The loud noises arising from the central market below reminded me that yes, I was in Asia. It was barely 8am, and since I had been out late the night before I had planned to have an easygoing lazy day. But still there was no way I was going to be able to sleep through all that racket. Feeling rough the way I was, I decided that the simple hotel breakfast was not going to be nearly enough for me, so I headed to Madison’s Pub for something more substantial. When I arrived the only people there were the French owner counting last night’s receipts and a friendly Khmer waitress. When the waitress laid my breakfast out before me, I knew I had come to the right place. The highlight was this huge fresh baguette. I ... read more

Of all the places I was going in Cambodia I was most interested in being in Battambang. Here was going to be a more untouristed side of Cambodia. Of course, as soon I arrived and disembarked from the bus there was a rush of tuk tuk drivers offering their services. One said he could take me to my hotel for $.50, but first he wanted to tell me about his tours. I didn’t really have any plans in Battambang anyway so I listened. He spoke very good English and I figured maybe he could actually give me some insight into the place. He told me about the numerous sights he could show me in one day, but I actually dislike cramming a whole day with sightseeing. We settled on him showing me everything to the south ... read more

The tours were a great way to meet people and make sure that I didn’t allow myself to be a sightseeing slacker. There was one more tour that sparked my interest, a sunset tour of the Grand Circuit. While they call it the Grand Circuit it actually encompasses a bunch of the smaller temples. Preah Khan, Ta Som, Neak Pean, East Mebon, and then finishing with a sunset viewing from Pre Rup. At 12:30pm a random assortment of strangers from the hostel piled into the van and away we went. The guide didn’t speak as much English as Curly, the guide from my Angkor Wat tour. I guess they save their best guides for the big one. The people on the tour were a little less outgoing then on my previous two tours. Also, there were ... read more

While in Siem Reap I have been staying at the Onederz Hostel. The combination of the hostel and the city have made everything such an easy introduction to Cambodia. It is a large hostel and the lobby is full of backpackers of all ages milling about. It is kind of fun to see their joy and sense of discovery. However, over the years I have done the backpacker social thing so many times that the thrill of it has worn off for me. It is nice to find some kindred spirits especially at the end of a long day, but more and more the only social thing that interests me is getting out, meeting and getting to know the locals. Pub Street, the center of town, is such a tourist centric madcap area that the only ... read more

Leisurely day today, no deadlines. We wake early but linger in our room, going down to breakfast at 0900 for our eagerly anticipated Eggs Benedict and Eggs Florantine. Never happened. After around 20 minutes and a whole pot of tea later, the waitress eventually came to our table to explain, "Sorry they are finished" presuming it must be due to a lack of ingredients, we say OK, just Poached eggs. 20 minutes go by, other guests arrive, order and are served. We have kept our patience splendidly and are rewarded with honesty. The waitress explains, "Sorry Sir and Madam, nbr 2 Chef try, cannot poach Eggs" suggests we try something else. Hiding our mirth, we say scrambled with bacon would be fine. Finally it arrives and it is very nice ,supplemented with the Buffet additions that ... read more

The Super Bowl had the convenient kickoff time of 6:30am Cambodia time. Being that I was still jetlagged I woke up wide awake at 4am. One of the Americans from my tour had done some research and had found a sports bar with huge TVs that was open and was showing the game. In order to make sure we got good seats we had arranged to meet in the hostel lobby at 5:30am. Once together, we set off down the darkened lanes of Siem Reap. Absolutely no one was up. The streets were empty. The day before where there had been a whole lot of people arising for the sunrise tour. At this time of the morning however, the city just was dark and quiet. Opening the door entering SCORE Sports Bar and Grill I felt ... read more

Wake up this morning quite excited. Breakfasted around 8am, the best we have experienced during our Cambodia travels so far. Eggs Benedict, delicious. By 9amwe are Tuk Tukking along and looking forward to our Big temple tour, today's driver having very passable English. Battling through the hectic Sunday Morning Market and all of it's madness, we soon find ourselves on quiet rural roads and sit back and enjoy observing local village life, complete with happy children, lazy dogs, even lazier cattle, roadside stalls selling silk scarves, coconut juice, palm sugar in jars and exquisite basket ware. First stop this morning is after roughly 40 km drive, taking one hour, through very flat but rural landscape to Banteay Srei. This temple is famous for its pink sandstone engrav... read more

After a short flight from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, where I spent my initial night in country, I found myself in the domestic terminal having to make my first decision: taxi or open air tuk-tuk. Easy. Tuk-tuk it is. I wanted to feel Cambodia. Listening to Cambodian band Dengue Fever’s CD “Deepest Lake” I whizzed through outer rings of the city towards the hostel where I was to be staying. The colors, fragrances, heat, and otherworldly tunes filtering through me were intoxicating. I was back in Southeast Asia. When the tuk-tuk arrived at the hostel the driver tried to upsell me on the many wonderful tours he could take me on during my stay. No thanks, friend. And I vanished into the hostel. It was large and busy with a very young smiley Cambodian staff. ... read more
