This is the family bio as provided by HFH Cambodia
Soem Salest is living with his wife and four children in a small house on the road corridor - the state land located in 13 Makara Village Center, Prek Preah Sdach Sangkat, Battambang Municipality, Battambang Province since 2006. They moved after facing the family crisis – as his mother needed to sell the house to repay the loan. Salest (43) and his wife Kuy Sreyno (38) requested a permit from the village chief to build a small temporarily house, size 4m x 5m on that state property. The place attached to the ground and cover by many old pieces of wood, zinc, and pieces of fabric.
Few years, in 2000, after Salest had a traffic accident, he is unable to perform any job. The family responsibility fell on Sreyno, who sells steam bananas and potatoes and his oldest son that quit school and have a temporary job as a chef for the wedding ceremony. A mother and son could earn about $130 a month to support the daily living. “Our situation became worst after my husband got an accident. I’ve to handle the family myself,” said Sreyno,
the breadwinner in a family. She added that due to the lack of financial support, she could send only two children to school. “I wish I could send all my kids to study, but it’s tough at the moment.”
Living on the state’s property, Sreyno’s family is confronting an eviction as the other families around her. “I’m worried where we can move live if they chase as out? We do not have money or proper job to buy land or build another house,” said Sreyno. She added her present living condition is no better for their home situation is appalling due to the flood, smelling water, leaking during the rain and the unavailability of the water and electricity connection.
Hearing about the social land concession program initiated by HFH Cambodia in collaboration with the Battambang Governor, Sreyno, and her family decided to apply for the plot of land. The committee selected her family, and soon they are going to build the new house on their plot of land. “Life is unpredictable. When we are about to lose hope, God gave us light. I remember the first time I was entitled to my new land for the house, and I couldn’t believe we are going to have our house soon,” Sreyno said with a smile on her face.
With land size 4.5m x 8m, Sreyno’s house will begin the construction this early February 2017. The Global Village team, from USA, will come and help the coming week. In addition to 75% support from HFH Cambodia on the Compressed Earth Block's house, construction materials, technical assistance, water, and electricity connection, the family received another 25% contribution from a Christian in Battambang.
Salest shared his feeling, "we are incredibly excited and enthusiasm in life now. Soon we are going to have a new stable house on our land. Thanks to HFH Cambodia and the government for giving us this new hope and opportunity." He added that environment in the new area is clean and fresh with sanitation, for it's not and not affecting by the flood.
