The Kingdom of Cambodia was somewhere I knew nothing about when I left home but reading guide books and autobiographies as I travelled left me fascinated to go there. Recent Cambodian history is horrifically riveting and I would say being aware some of what happened is a pre-requisite for visiting the country. Such recent and mass scale bloodshed cannot fail to have an effect on people and as I gazed out of bus windows at endless rice paddies, cycled round Angkor Wat or ate noodles in the Russian Market in Phnom Pehn, the past echoed in the back of my mind. It's for this reason that I don't feel like I can write about my travels in Cambodia without first going over some of the country's history. Cambodia like Laos was a French Colony. Hey Everyone! It's been a little while since we had decent internet, so I've backdated the posts to match the days we were at those places. (today it's September 29th here) On our last night in Siem Reap we went to Pub street with a few of the people from our group and our guide. We went to Temple Club, and she knew almost everyone there. They have a promotion where you get a free t-shirt for each pitcher of drinks you buy... I think we left with about 7 t-shirts between the 5 of us, but we had loads of fun. I danced up a storm with girls from all over the world, and Trev maintained control of the pool table all night. The morning of the 25th we boarded a public bus for Kompong ... read more

I crossed into Cambodia and went to frontier town - Banlung. It's quite remote and surrounded by mountains. The town itself is not particularly interesting, but there are lakes and waterfalls around. I met a Russian girl, Alina, on the bus and we stuck together while there. We rented a mountain bikes and went to see a crater lake. It was raining and I wanted to rent a motor bike, but we couldn't find a place that rented them, so we ended up renting mountain bikes. The bikes had no fenders, so our backs were covered in mud by the time we got there. It was fun though. The lake is really nice and the water is very green. We swam there for a couple of hours. There was a very cool monkey living near one ... read more

On the bus to Kratie, I ran into Danny and Duck, guys I previously traveled with in Laos. Kratie is a nice little town on the river. We rented bikes one day and took a ferry across the river to an island. Bike around there. It was really nice, with little kids screaming 'hello' every time we passed them. Next day, we rented motor bikes and went south to Chlon, the took a ferry to the other side. The other bank is not very touristy and really rural, which was nice as the scenery was amazing. We were ridding north, where we planned to cross back to our side of the river. Unfortunately, about 3 quarters of the way, Danny and I stopped for bubble tea, with Duck no where in site. Then a couple of ... read more

Chris's Section The overnight bus from Vientiane to Pakse was pretty good. Even though the beds were about 2 inches too short, I still managed to get quite a bit of sleep and the 11 hour journey went quickly. Pakse was a little forgettable, which was fine as it was just a stop-off to break up the trip down to the South. We set off the next day for Si Phan Don, or as it's also known, the 4000 islands. The area is an archipelago of sandbars and rocky islands covered in jungle and/or rice fields. We decided to head to Don Det, which is the most developed of the islands. I say developed, they only got electricity in March! We found a nice place for 40,000 kip a night (about £3.30). Much of the accommodation ... read more

Greetings from Viet Nam! We're in Dalat now (weird, weird place.. but very cool!) but I'm trying to catch up, so I'm going to write about our time in Northeastern Cambodia first! KRATIE: We came here as a stopover from Phnom Penh. While we had a good time, it's probably not worth making the trip, but if you do decide to go, you don't need more than 2 nights. We went and saw these Irawaddy noseless dolphins (they're endangered), climbed up to this cool temple on a hill, and went to see some "rapids" (i.e. a really dirty babbling brook type thing). The temple was really fun though! The highlight of the trip though was when we rented these bicycles (push bikes). We took the local ferry over to this little island ($1 round trip) and ... read more

The scooter is unstrapped from the back and the concrete shrines removed from the boot. The back of the minivan rises about a foot. We're in Ban Lung, the capital of Ratanakiri Province, northeast Cambodia. After a massive plate of roast beef with garlic, we explore the town. It's got a bit of a wild west / being on the edge of civilization feel to it. Overloaded scooters and pick-ups bumping along wide puddled dirt roads. Smoke billowing from food stalls on wheels. Gem shops, mobile phone sellers, families eating in roadside food places. Noise, flies, skinny dogs trotting along. All underneath an epic sky, with storm systems drifting along. We sit at the kerb and watch life go by and the sun go down having a few beers, then stumble back to the hotel and ... read more

Few hours on a bus north out of Phnom Penh takes us to Kratie, a small town on the banks of the Mekong. Arrive late afternoon. Hot hot hot. After we check in, a guy takes us on his scooter a few kilometres up the river to see the famous Irriwady dolphins. 3 on a scooter isn't as uncomfortable as it sounds, but it does bottom out the suspension a little, so you feel every bump in your teeth. Not quite sure what would happen with an emergency stop either, but we've seen 5 adults on one before, so 3 is nothing. We jump in a boat with our driver (who is about twelve years old) and then push off. The river is pretty wide, with lots of small grassy islands dotted around. Somehow the sky ... read more
