So yes.. it's really hot here.. ...... I woke up and headed right over to Panaga club to watch my cousin train tennis (she’s freaking pro! She represented Brunei in some borneo national games). Darren was playing with my Nintendo Ds… poor guy had to wake up early to send nessa to tennis lol. Anyways! After tennis we went over to the Tamu (market). Quite interesting to eat in a market again. Nessa ordered me Mee Hoon. The trip back to the house was quite nostalgic. Cico (nessa’s bro) drove me past my old Flat (apartment thing). I saw it and it brought back memories. THE badminton court lines that my dad and I painted are STILL on the parking lot! Lol that’s so Sweet! Hopefully I can get a more thorough visit before I leave. ... read more

A ferry to Labuan Island and then one to Muara brought us to Brunei, providing a welcome break from bus journeys and a chance to see one of the richest countries in the world, run by one of the richest men in the world. Free education, free health care, subsidised housing, subsidised cars, and no income tax are just a few of the perks of being a citizen of the Sultanate of Brunei. Downers are the legality of detention without trial, a lack of democracy, and having a ruling family peppered with members hell-bent on spending money ill-advisedly (e.g. on thousands of cars, a boat called SS Tits, a number of young female models hired (unbeknownst to them) to be sex slaves, etc), however the citizenry don't appear overly unhappy with their lot, which will presumably ... read more

Started off the day by going out for brunch at ayam-ku. It’s near the new soon lee market. I ate quay teow and kolo mee. .MmMm.. I wanted to hang out with didi and her family today, but there were some time conflicts. So instead of going over , I just stayed home for a bit till nessa left. When she left, I was on my way to trekking kuala belait (city im in). So kind of walked 20 mins in one direction, and then got really scared when I saw three stray dogs, and then I walked back through the beach. Got a lot of nice photos with that too. Then nessa came back and I met her boyfriend :o *gasp* His name is Darren. We went out for the evening in this restaurant with ... read more

Didn’t really do too much today. Woke up quite late and ate lunch at home. My aunt was calling.. “ASHISH!! LUNCH!!” and I thought we were going to go out and eat so I hurried my butt off to get changed and stuff… but n0o00o it was a home lunch lol. We just basically stayed around the house and watched TV till 3:30.. then it was time for Vanessa’s first day at tennis training camp! Cico (nessa’s bro) drove us to panaga club (he plays golf there). The deal was that I do w/e at Panaga while nessa’s trains for tennis for 3 hours. So guess what I did? PHOTOS! The club is so beautiful, and so is the beach. So I basically went around and took lots, and lots and lots of photos.. around 300 ... read more

In the morning, ness went to get her pants hemmed and I went to exchange $$ for Brunei dollars. At the bank, I saw my uncle.. uncle apo I believe? I’m really bad at remembering.. unfortunately sigh. After that, ness and I just went over to a small restaurant and ate matabat (its like roti chanai ish), and drank teh tarek (MMmMm). Then nessa’s friends came over, and then my cousin came! His name was Anthony and we used to play together lol. It was ... read more

Arrival in Brunei At around 12PM local time, I arrived in Brunei. This was it! While the airplane was flying over Brunei, it started to feel real. I saw the oh so familiar trees, and the non-blue rivers, and cars driving on different sides. That’s when it started to feel real to me. On arrival, I wasn’t sure what to do. Earlier, I was required to fill out a health card thing and an immigration card thing. But after talking to a few immigrant looking people (white ppl :)), I knew what to do with the cards. I handed in my cards, went through customs and picked up my luggage. Then the final step came, luggage check. The check was right in front of the outside doors, and I could not help but peek outside and ... read more

So after some confusion in the parking lot, and some confusions of fees, I’m finally here waiting for Gate D65 to open. Sorry for the blatant opinion there. I know how I get in to trouble when I post them but our two days and one night in Brunei's capital seemed like an eternity. The trip from Miri to BSB was short and comfortable and we settled in to our slightly less than desirable accommodation. Having had a quick wander around the mosques and having checked out a few of the sultan's palaces we soon realised that there really was little else to do. The evening in BSB was utterly dead and we couldn't even drink away our boredom as there is no alcohol in the whole bleeding country. The highlight of our evening was collectively doing a sewing repair to one of our day sacks! Happily the next day we decided to take the boat tour around ... read more

I have been to all countries in South East Asia (except East Timor). Brunei is the last country in SE Asia that I visited, and also my favorite country in the region. In May 2007, I visited Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) for a few days and enjoyed a great time over there. From Hanoi, I flew to Kuala Lumper then BSB on Air Asia budget airlines. My 15 hour transit at the LCCT (low cost carrier terminal) in KL was so long. Waiting for 15 hours over night at the airport was a real challenge to my patience. However, it was also fun watching people at the airport passing by me and I thought “This is my life! I love this.” At that time, I still needed a Brunei visa (visa fee US$12), but some months ... read more

We managed to get about an hours sleep at the airport, I got a bit more on the plane after we had taken off & then Claire woke me up for breakfast. When we got to Brunei we got our bags checked at the airport & questioned if we had alcohol with us. Although alcohol isn’t illegal here for non Muslim people you are only allowed to bring in a certain amount for personal consumption & have to declare it at customs. We arranged transport to the hotel we had booked & checked in about 1pm. We had air con in the room & as it was so hot outside & we were so tired we watched TV, had a shower, had a sleep & eventually ventured as far as the supermarket across the road ... read more
