Well we arrived late the other night from Sao Paulo to a really nice hostel just over the border in Argentina. We lucked out getting a ride here and whizzed through the border after skipping a huge line of people and cars, passport stamped we checked into our room (thankfully we reserved in advance). The hostel here is pretty cool, reminds us of a summer camp with a huge common area containing pool tables, table tennis (I beat Jacky twice, she is not very good at table tennis at all) and chess. A huge pool, nice bar and questionable restaurant round off the delightful paradise just outside of Puerto Iguazu. Yesterday we visited the falls, which were quite breathtaking, the hikes got me excited since I need to get ready for Patagonia, but unfortunately they were ... read more

Antarctic Peninsula Eh? This might be a longer email but hey....one can´t possibly skip the details. Our ship was quite a collection of oddballs but I guess that´s what makes it fun. The first day we were crossing the Beagle Channel so everything was cool. The next day, we start crossing the Drake Passage. I thought I was going to be a hero and find out if I get sea sick or not. (Mind you, that the drake passage has the roughest waters in the world). The answer came the next day, about 2 hours after breakfast. I wasn´t feeling like US$1.5 million and after I recycled my breakfast the second time, I thought: ´´Hey, maybe, just maybe it is time to see a doctor and take some pills. So that is exactly what I did. ... read more

The cruise was sooo much fun and we took advantage of the many services on offer. There were loads to keep the folks entertained, especially during the many days at sea. We also made our own involving loads of smuggled on alcohol. I dont think I have ever laughed so much in my life! Apart from eating (which did take up loads of time). There were the arts and crafts classes, where we got to make a valentines card - we learned how to marble and make a pop out heart. The teacher was hilarious and said seriously "ín the art world we fold the paper hot dog or hamburger" (aka portrait/landscape) I didnt realise we were in the art world!. Also how to make a stuffed fish pin (!), how to decorate a sun glasses ... read more

February 10th, 2006, Day 36 of our cruise of 105, 69 to go. This is the evening after South Georgia. South Georgia was a whaling station that closed as late as 1965; now a research and conservation station with 12 residents year round! We saw a fantastic museum, a church, the ruins of the whaling station and the cemetery for whalers, seamen graves and Shakelton’s memorial. We saw, smelled and heard sea lions, fur seals and King penguins. Weather was perfect with sunny skies Hi Hello my children Ttys, love to all ... read more

February 9th, 2006, evening after cruising between non- South Oarkney Islands and South Georgia tomorrow at 7 am; we are out of the Antarctic Circle. South Georgia was a whaling station that closed as late as 1965! Formal tonight, the grouch, who is not a grouch anymore, does not know yet. We smile and laugh a lot, and gossip about other passengers. Day 35 of our cruise of 105, 70 to go. It being a sea day, out of Antarctica, activities resumed. At creative writing class, we turned in our romance poem for publication of the best in the daily program at Valentine’s day. Here is my contribution: Together Lovingly Dating passionately Rearing family instinctively Empty nesting thankfully* Exiting peacefully Together, Forever *kids, don’t take this too personally Our next assignment is an Ode to the ... read more

February 8th, 2006, evening after cruising the Gerlache Straight of the Antarctic Peninsula We will be here for 3 days, weather permitting and then make our way to Africa by the 18th. Day 34 of our cruise of 105, 71 to go, almost a third over, pity. Antarctica is cold and foggy. After a first sunny day at Anvers Island, we have had 2 days of dodging icebergs, riding swells and canceling destinations. No hope of seeing Esperansa Bay, Elephant Island was a series of rocky spikes half covered with glaciers, the other half with fog. Deception Bay was just that, we could not see much of the hot watered volcanic activity where smaller ship bring in passengers for a swim; 2 of our passengers did the polar swim yesterday morning in the pool but I ... read more

Hello What an amazing continent! What an amazing experience! Feel very lucky and special to have stepped onto the Antartic, and to have seen what I have seen. After nearly 2 days at sea, our first stop was Half Moon Island, which is in the Antartic Convergence but not actually Antartica itself. We got kitted out in all our warm clothes and our FREE Marco Polo red expedition parkas and boarded our zodiacs to take us from the cruise liner to the shore. It was soo cold (it is the Antartic!) and we began to wish we could go back in time and buy those water proof trousers - especially when a huge wave hit us! It was stunning, we saw loads and loads of chinstrap penguins. They were soooo many and they were so cute. ... read more

February 5th, 2006, evening after cruising the Gerlache Straight of the Antarctic Peninsula We will be here for 3 days, weather permitting and then make our way to Africa by the 18th. Day 31 of our cruise of 105, 74 to go. Yesterday, as we arrived in the Antarctic, for lunch, we were feted with a snowflake buffet; there were carved ice shrimp boats and sculptures of Antarctic themes- see devilled eggs picture. Superbowl Sunday, Terry is with the crowd, I can’t find him! He just walked in!! He tells me that he was sitting with a fine gentleman from Toronto called Ross, rooting for Seattle-Hello you all from Sea Hawk country. "Polar exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised. It is the only form of adventure in which you put on your clothes at Michaelmas and keep them on until Christmas, and save for a layer of the natural grease of the body, find them as clean as though they were new. It is more lonely than London, more secluded than any monastery." (The worst journey in the world; Apsley Cherry-Garrard) The Antarctic is a land of extremes. It´s the highest continent, with an average elevation of 2250m. Its ice sheets hold 90% of the worlds ice which is up to 4775m thick and in places the huge weight depresses the landmass by 1600m. The lowest recorded temperature on the continent was -89C. Its an ... read more
