Since we have been back in Arusha we enjoyed one of their holidays "nane nane" (8/8 or Aug 8th). It is a holiday celebrating agriculture here in Tanzania. It is like our state/county fairs....without the rides. We learned about how the goat hides are processed .... takes about a month. We purchased jewlery, pillow covers, goat skin picture frame , sandles, and then some glasses, forks, and cutting knife for Shannon and Bariki. It was fun to pick out what we wanted and for Shannon and Bariki to negotiate ... she holds her own quite well that impresses the locals...and us. That evening we had our wild game night eating Eland ( a large moose that we saw in Ngorongoro Crater ... first we see, then we eat ). Afterwards we went and watched cultural dancing - including African, interpretive, and breakdancing...fun. Next day we were ready to get off our butts and take a hike. One of Bariki's friends Tom met with the Massai counselor (head man whose land we were to walk through) to ask permission the day before. We had a 6-hour hike walking through their "town" turning many heads, their planting fields, meeting a Maasai Momma who thought we took a picture of her - she was quite upset, through the rain forest, and into the creek up to a beautiful waterfall for lunch. Since it was actually Nane Nane day, there were many secondary school students on field trip....eventful. It was a great hike. That evening we had our first front leg of goat ... it was chewy and really tasted nothing like we have had before. We went upstairs for shisha and konyagi (papaya gin) ... giggle time for sure. To top off the evening we went dancing ... everyone dances pretty much together. We had a great time getting home about 1:30am. Yesterday we drove off to see Mt. Kilmarjaro ... from a distance of course. Takes about 6-days to hike up since it is the tallest mountain in Africa. Topped with snow and above the clouds ... too cool. Today we are off to shop and tomorrow to the school and staying overnight at the boma complete with the killing of a goat for dinner. Hope for one more blog before leaving on Thursday to Dar Es Salam. xo

Happy Anniversary
Happy Anniversary from far far away. Sounds like you two are having way too much. Kevin and I are thinking about roasting a goat for you when you get back. Costco doesn't stock goat so we will be looking around the hills for a tender one ;-) Have a safe trip home. Love, The Newark Homeboys
