Having recovered from the hellish road journey out of Mana Pools we were lucky to catch a ride with a bus going straight to Lusaka, Zambia. Arriving in Lusaka in the evening we made our way to Chachacha Backpackers, showered and devoured a whole barbequed peri peri chicken : ) well deserved after our days of starvation post hippo attack...... We spent some time hanging out with a couple of cool dudes (one from Chile: Roberto and the other from Israel: Nadav). We ate really well in Lusaka, finding a great Indian restaurant and a Slovenian place as well. A highlight for Flo was finally getting to watch "The A-Team" on the big screen. While walking through the SOWETO markets in Lusaka we experienced our first attempted group pick pocket attack where someone stepped on Roberto's ... read more

May 25th Typical morning at the Croc Valley campsite: keeping the primates from stealing all your food! Their sneaky little shites, creeping up out of nowhere and stealing a tomato or onion. That happened the day before actually but this morning they had gotten on the truck and ripped open a bag of beans and rice as well. You can check out a video of me fending for my life against one of the primates here, eventually. There is another video of them eating rice and hangin’ around the truck here. So after breakfast we packed up our things and headed out of the national park. Farron had another Farron surprise for us, so we were excited. Although admittedly it would be hard to top his previous surprise which was Sanje Falls. He took us to ... read more

May 24th It was the same morning routine as always, tea and toast with before beginning the day, but for this particular day we had absolutely nothing to do. Ahh what a great feeling not having to sit in the truck and go 200 miles! The day was reserved for game drives around the national park. We had two choices, we could do the morning drive or an evening drive. I had originally opted to do the night drive, but ended up changing my mind. I was happy to just sit on the banks of the Luangwa River at the Croc Valley campsite and just listen to the hippos all day while I practiced on the drum. The campsite is amazing, you can check out a video of it here (eventually). So the seven of us ... read more

May 23rd The morning wasn’t so bad even though I got about 4 hours asleep. The whole group was milling about the camp eating breakfast and talking about the plan over the next few days. A few of the Dragoman group weren’t around for a final goodbye but we wished them all well and hoped they would get on schedule soon. Before we left we did add one to the Southbound Six, a girl named May from Amsterdam would be getting a ride with us down to Livingstone, Zambia. It was nice to add a fresh face to the group and someone more to talk to and hear stories from. We got on the road on time and after a stop and the gas station we were headed for the Malawi/Zambia border. We got there after ... read more

So we did a 9 day tour with Kiboko based out of Lilongwe, Malawi. It was great! My sister and I left Lilongwe March 1st with another PCV and her dad, a doctor from the UK, a guy from Holland, a driver and one of the managers of Kiboko (which is the name of the tour company we used based in Lilongwe) and we traveled to Luangwa Valley. We stayed at a campsite in South Luangwa National Park for 2 full days and IT WAS AWESOME. Our tents actually had BEDS in them - and ELECTRICITY! It was right on this huge river, and you had to constantly watch out for your food because of the baboons (and the bar owners pet squirrel). I at first thought it was funny that at night we had to ... read more

Helloo everyone! A quick hello from Zambia! It has been a action packed last few days! It has included my first aid skills, bar fights, Christmas Mass in the local village, listening to my new favorite music artists on the beach, an elephant charging at our safari truck (barely missed us) and no dry clothing. I'm really learning a lot about the local cultures and different ways of life. The western way is not always the right way and even though everything takes sooo long here, it makes the destination so much more enjoyable. I'm also learning about myself and working on making the qualities I like in other people the qualities I like about myself (in my own way of course). One of the best things I've learned is everyone has a story. I often ... read more

After flying to Lusaka Zambia from the US (via Jo'burg) I slept overnight in Lusaka (Protea Hotel Arcades). Next morning I took a flight on Proflight from the Lusaka airport ($8 departure tax) to Mfuwe. The costly flight was fairly short and a little bumpy but worth it since I only had 2 extra days for a safari. My reservations at Mfuwe Lodge inside South Luangwa park included a friendly guide who met me at the airport and drove me back to the Lodge. The road from the airport to the Mfuwe entrance to the Park is newly paved and the prosperous villages which line the road reflect the impact of the tourist industry on the area. I had 2 weeks of village life first hand in a different part of Zambia which relied only on ... read more

We spent a couple of nights in an amazing campsite in South Luangwa national park. The campsite was called Croc Valley, and there was situated on the edge of a river that was indeed full of crocodiles and hippos. Within a few hours of arriving, there were 4 elephants wandering through the campsite - we were so close to them! The next day we had a couple of game drives - one first thing in the morning and the other one in the evening after dark. We managed to see a whole pride of lions snoozing within a couple of metres from our car - we got so close that one woke up and started to get annoyed that we were so close, and we were all quite scared that she was going to jump right ... read more

After a few days of rest and relaxation at Lake Malawi, we pass through Lilongwe and on to our next country - Zambia. Our time in Zambia will be divided in two, the first stay being at the South Luangwa National Park, and our second at Livingstone, separated by a brief visit to Zimbabwe. Our camp site at South Luangwa is in the best tradition of national park camp sites - next to a crocodile and hippo infested river, plagued by mischeveous monkeys and prone to the odd elephant wandering between the tents, or leopard drinking from the pool (which is designed so that a hippo can get out if it falls in...). We drive into the park early in the morning, and after a fairly fruitless few hours spotting nothing but kudu (a type of ... read more

I will not eat you". Es war sehr lustig. Ich glaube, er lacht heute noch. Lusaka ist keine schoene Stadt, eigentlich eine richtige Dreckstadt. Aber es gibt alles und ein phaenomenaler Supermarkt ... read more
