On Getting Arrested. OK so I got arrested. Not really. Just a ride to the police station. I was in Matmata where the some parts of the Star Wars movies were filmed - and the tourist police came by. As I was the only ewok in town, I got lucky. Yes, the police wanted to see my passport and ask all sorts of personal questions. As Hardy was busy asking me out for coffee every five minutes, Laurel was examining my clean passport. The Hardy character really did remind me of his name sake - besides being rather roley-poly, he was sporting the requisite police mustache. As I was tuning down offers for coffee Laurel noticed that I had, in his words, dropped from heaven. He meant of course that there is a period in my ... read more

OK so I really like Tunisia. I cant help it. The people are awesome, the weather is outstanding (I went swimming yesterday Jodi!) and the food is fantastic! I have been in Tunisia for exactly one week today. I flew from Amman where I nearly missed my flight. Note to self: one hour is NOT enough time to clear security and passport control and check-in. On the up side however, I did not have to hang around the airport looking for something to do. I also got a security escort (3 guys) all the way to the plane! I was slightly nervous at passport control - I was using my clean passport with no exit stamps from Jordan and I was afraid he would ask to see my other passport. He took half a look and ... read more

After my college year I felt like doing something different. And so i did. 2 weeks Monastir was just the thing I felt like doing. Normaly Tunesia is not a country people going to from The Netherlands. I stayed in Club Skanes Garden just 10 minutes by bus from Monastir - Habib Bourguiba International Airport. Skanes stands confessed its endless white beaches, clear blue sky and sea. This quiet, but coloured holiday harbour lies between Sousse and Monastir a the east coust of Tunisia. The meaning of this trip is enjoying the country travel around and enjoy the sun. So the first couple of day's I didn't do anything. Enjoying the sun at the beach or around the swimmingpool. Because of the All Inclusive formula at this resort I dronk and ate a lot. The first ... read more

Well so far Tunisia had been fabulous!! After a lot of more developed countries (Mexico City, New York, London, Greece, Turkey) it was nice to get back to something a bit more exotic and different!! And cheap too!! It's nice when the Aussie dollar stretches a bit more... :) We were really enjoying Tunisia - the people were really friendly, even though they spoke French and we didn't understand. But from their demeanour we hope they were being friendly. Food has been an interesting experience. At the last few places listed above, we have had an opportunity to try the food back home in Sydney. Tunisia is the first place in a long while where everything was strange again!! Didn't help that the menus are all in french either. Thankfully Catherine knew enough french to distinguish ... read more

Tunisia was one of the parts of our trip that was an afterthought which became an obsession! we wanted to go to somewhere in North Africa and started by thinking about Morocco but were advised that it probably was not the safest spot! obviously Algeria and Libya were out so Tunisia it was... so armed with this thought we went to the travel agent and asked for it to be included in our round the world ticket... here is where the problem begins... funnily enough one world does not fly Tunisia to Egypt! but by now it had become an obsession for us to go and so we paid the extra sector flights and hopped on the plane!! so given that we have paid a lot of money to go to Tunisia we were absolutely determined ... read more

If you can't guess, I went to Carthage today (for the uncultured Carthage is an ancient city that was once one of the most powerful cities in that part of the world - famous associated people include Hannibal the guy who marched on Rome with an army of elephant riding troops over the Italian alps). Today was my last day in Tunisia, so I left the luxury of the conference hotel and travelled into Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. Tunis is a bit of a hole - nothing much to see except for 2 main sights - Carthage and a beautiful seaside town called Sidi Bou Said. Carthage was a major disappointment mainly because all that remains is a few crumbling ruins and a dodgy museum. Most of the ruins are spread out across a built ... read more

Bit of a dud day today. Slept till 12, then presented my lecture and then slept a bit more. Went down for dinner - discovered that it was the grand conference final dinner which would involve lots of speaking, and thus decided to skip it and go to sleep. As a result, couldn't sleep that night so stayed up watching CNN (the only english channel that I had). I am so up to date on the Indonesian earthquake and the popes feeding tube!!... read more

Today was day 3 of the 5 day conference, and I was sick of conference. Bored stupid. So I decided to skip today and head out to Kairoun, apparently the 4th most holy city in all of the world. The trip to Kairoun was short and sweet - and uneventful 1.5h journey with none of the customary pleasantaries of Tunisian bus travel such as men with bad body odour or women who talk too loud. Women here (older women in particular) have no concept of volume - they just yell in their nasal annoying voices - just yell - I don't think they actually are talking to anybody - they just yell. Now I was expecting everybody to be extra holy in this city, seeing as it is the 4th most holy city in all of ... read more

I am so bored. I hate this conference. Most of the papers have English titles and English content, but for some reason the presenters all have decided to present in French. The result is that I can't understand most of the sessions. I can thankfully at least read their slides fairly well, but its hard listening to sessions where you understand every 15th word. So in the afternoon, I went on strike and headed to the pool. It was quite disgusting because many of the tourists were fat old french ladies who had no qualms about sunbathing topless. Blurk!! Thus, I wandered down the beach and watched tourists go paragliding and kids riding camels and horses up and down the beach. After 30 minutes of that, I was really bored, so I decided to be a ... read more
