G'day! Just back after spending sometime in the Saharan summer, in Tunisia and Algeria. Rickety bus rides, train rides, packed louages, 4WD driving with no maps, hitchhiking, cycling. Randomess in order was back, and then there were colourful carpets, carthagian ruins, roman towers, presidents poster pasted everywhere, stupendously beautiful mosques, vegetarian salads with fish, or beef, or pork, slyly buying beers, though beer cans are strewn all over the street, lovely beaches, houses with flat roofs, gorgeous sky, extreme sandstorms, one of which blew the car off, patterned veils, marked absence of women in any coffee shops, hukka and some 24 different flavours, masively large potatoes, boxes of icecreams, the mix of arabic and french in Tunisian language, hearing to Tezaab, Sholay and plenty of SRK's songs in the streets of Mahres, towns dead in the ... read more

Tunis and around The last couple of days of this journey I visited some places in and near Tunis. But before I start writing about what I saw and did then I will write about two things that happened in Tunisia that were not so fun. In 2002 Tunisia was a very nice and safe country to travel in. People were friendly and I enjoyed myself a lot. But when traveling even at the best of times things can happen that are not fun. Usually we write nothing or only very little about the moments when it sucks to travel. Here I will make an exception and write about one near robbery and one near death experience. One day in Tunis I was approached by a man who wanted to befriend me. Oh yes, I am ... read more

A Roman bathhouse (still in use) a Roman amphitheatre (where Monty Python's been filming) and the remains of a Roman city (not in use) Douriet In the previous blog entry from Tunisia I wrote about a few Berber villages I visited. Douriet is another such village. Like the other villages, Douriet is today mostly in ruins. Sfax Sfax is a large city on the Tunisian east coast. The mighty city walls are still today protecting the old town of Sfax with its medina, the shopping quarters. Well, "protecting" perhaps is not the word the locals would use. The walls are probably more of a problem than a protection today. There are gates in the wall of course. The largest of these is named Bab Diwan. El Jem One of the highlights of th... read more

Star Wars filming locations, a gorgeous gorge and Rock the Casbah A few years ago we started to digitalize photos from travels we did before we joined TravelBlog. If you've seen any them and like them, we have good news. We have some more of those coming up since Ake has written about a trip he made in Tunisia in 2002. If you don't want to look at slightly sepia-coloured photos, my recommendation is that you stop reading now and try to find something better to do. I began this trip in Tunis, the capitol of Tunisia. I only stayed there one day because I knew that I would have time to explore Tunis in the end of the trip. This day, other than getting adjusted to the country and learning to find my way around, ... read more

Beach Holiday in Tunesia Our first holiday together. We went to Sousse for a relaxing holiday at the Tunesian coast. We stayed 2 weeks in hotel Tej Marhaba****. From there we made some trips around the country. The rest of our time we relaxed at the beach or the pool. We also did a boat trip along the coast of Sousse and Port El Kantaoui. Port El Kantaoui is a nice beach resort near Sousse. It an ideal place for a nice evening strolling around in the little village with nice shops, bars and restaurants. Trips we did during this holiday: - the capital Tunis, the charming village of Sidi Bou Saïd and the ruïns of Carthago - a 2-day trip to the south of Tunesia incl. the amphitheatre of El Jem, the troglodyte houses of ... read more

Africa » Tunisia November 24th 1983

24 November 1983 Thursday. We decided to spend Thanksgiving by joining a German tour group to Tunisia. We flew Condor from Stuttgart to Tunis. After clearing customs and immigration, the tour bus took us to the beach resort at Hammamet, about and hour south of the airport, where we spent the rest of the day on the beach; but not in the water which was too cold. However, the pool was warmer so we had a quick dip before dinner. That evening we had the Tunesian version of a Thanksgiving dinner, which was just fine. 25 November 1983 Friday. We joined the tour to Kairouan, an hour south of Hammamet. Kairouan, which means caravan, was at the northern end of the trade routes that crossed the Sahara desert, so was very prosperous. In 694 it was ... read more
