Star Wars filming locations, a gorgeous gorge and Rock the Casbah A few years ago we started to digitalize photos from travels we did before we joined TravelBlog. If you've seen any them and like them, we have good news. We have some more of those coming up since Ake has written about a trip he made in Tunisia in 2002. If you don't want to look at slightly sepia-coloured photos, my recommendat... Read Full Entry

Star Wars fans will recognise Lars homestead and possibly Mos Isley cantina.

Some of the troglodyte dwellings have been converted into hotels. It's a pretty cool experience to sleep in an underground room

A sign saying that the road leads to Tripoli. Tripoli sounded like a very unlikely place for me to visit back in 2002. Today I'd say it is even more unlikely that I'd go there.

Ksar Hadada is another place which has come to fame from being used as a filming location for a Star Wars movie.

In the movie Ksar Hadada represents Mos Espa, the birthplace of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.

It was in the old part of the village, a traditional fortified Berber village, where the filming took place. From what I can understand nobody lives in these buildings today.

The Berber village was designed with emphasis on large storage capacity and for being easily protected against attacks from the outside. Comfortable living standard was of little or no concern.

It looks very much like I am wearing a Jedi cape, but it isn't. It is a cape worn by Tunisian shepherds. And now I am hated by every Star Wars fan in the world...

Part I Tunesia
We'd love to do this trip soon. It is great when people blog about past trips.

Similarities
I loved seeing these photos, it reminded me so much of the architecture and clarity of light in Berber country in southern Morocco. The scenes from Star Wars that were filmed in Tunisia are still fresh in my brain all these years later- I loved it :)

The pictures don't do it justice
Sadly my pictures are old transparencies that I have digitized. Over the years the colours have faded. It was much better to see it for real. Since you have been to Morocco you know what I am talking about. /Ake

A blast from the past
Been looking forward to your Tunisia blogs from your trip in 2002, Ake, and worth the wait. What a plethora of fabulous memories and images...bringing the extraordinary history of Tunisia to life. Magic!

I want to go back
Tunisia is a country I really would like to return to some day. There were several places I didn't have to visit and I feel that it could be rewarding to visit random places there as well, places not mentioned in the guidebook. But it is not likely that I will go there any time soon. I don't think it is safe there at the moment. /Ake

Old Travels
Great idea to be writing about old travels. I've often considered doing the same, and hope to eventually. You're right, the photos look so old, yet it was only around 20 years ago - how does that happen?! I visited Tunisia around 10 years ago, and just loved the Star Wars locations! Beautiful country!

Photos look old
I used slides back then, not digital photography. Possibly the photos have aged/colours have faded in that time. When I had them digitized it is possible that device I used was cheap and that would of course also affect the quality. I have a new device for making digital photos from slides. When I test that I will see if the quality is improved. /Ake
