What can I say, apparently life is never going to be boring here!!!! I guess I should start from last Sunday, and my church invite. I was invited to the church by Joakim (project coordinator), so that he could introduce me to the community (and I was introduced as principal of course!). I took a few other volunteers along with me - Sally, Jenny & Nicki. I managed to fill 5 pages of my journal for the time in church alone so I'd better summarize a little bit. We are all glad we had the experience of attending the church service (all 4 hours of it), and it is definitely something I will never forget, but it was very emotionally disturbing, traumatic even. The church was really small & the floor was just regular gravel. ... read more

OK … I bet I have your attention, but yes, that’s right, earthquakes in Tanzania!! We have had, not one, but three earthquakes in the last four days. The first one, we didn’t feel, was on Thursday. The 2nd was on Saturday. I was napping on the couch, (I’ll tell you why in a minute), and woke up thinking that Anthony was shaking me awake. When I looked around, no one was there, but the couch was still shaking!! Honestly I thought I was just dreaming, but then Anthony said he felt it and John came from across the street and said he felt it too. We looked it up on the internet and it hit northwest of Arusha and measured 4.5 on the Richter Scale. Then today after we had gotten home from worship services ... read more

So I am typing at the computers at hall 7 of the university of dar es salaam where i have spent so many hours last year. its nice being back to something of a home. i collected on campus really nice small bright red seeds that i will use someday for something. yesterday i arrived in dar from zanzibar. i had spent my 21 birthday in the village of bwejuu in the southern east coast of zanzibar. i woke up in a beach bungalow/mzungu place with beata, sibylle, and their parents and was suprised at breakfast with champagne. then i went for a swim in the indian ocean and a walk in the town. we were the only ones at this bungalow place for five days. its a rasta owner and he had a beautiful cat ... read more

We spent the night at Dar Es Salaam on our last day with the truck, on a campsite at the beach. The weather was very hot and humid and so I upgraded to a banda (beach hut) because I couldn't be bothered to put up my tent! There were two other trucks from the same company there with us (and they stuck with us in Zanzibar as well) so we had a big party on the beach with all of them. The next day we got a ferry from our campsite across to the main ferry port, and then a ferry over to Zanzibar Island - it was a very rough and choppy crossing, and a few people were seasick. When we arrived we travelled straight to our accomodation at Kendra beach near Nungwi, where we ... read more

Jambo! Well, I was thinking I didn't have much to write about this time but when I started thinking more about it all I realized I actually have A LOT to talk about. Life is definitely feeling kind of routine here but then when I think about all the things that are happening it sounds far from it. It has been a strange week, and certainly not my happiest. It started off with a visit to Joakim's house. Joakim is the project coordinator for LETOA. The first thing Joakim did was show me 'our land'. Anyone fancy coming out here and building us a house? The next thing Joakim showed me was his graveyard (right next to our land). His mother, wife, and two sons. He told me his mother died because of problems with ... read more

Well, we have just finished our week with the vet school at the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro, Tanzania (about 3 hours by road west of Dar es Salaam). Since Andrew didn't talk about it, I'll briefly mention our trip in from Dar- on one of those buses that you really ought not to take- by then we were pretty desperate to get on any bus due to a 3-4 hour late arrival in Dar. We did arrive intact though, and it wasn't as sketchy as I thought it would be (I was just happy to get here). Morogoro is a bustling little town, at the foot of some mountains, which makes it picturesque. The people here speak mostly swahili (it's not a tourist town quite yet), so we've been trying to pick some up, ... read more

When you decided to become a Christian, what did that decision cost you? Earlier this week I had another Bible study with an elderly woman that I've been studying with over the past several weeks. This woman lives several hours away, near the coast, but she has been staying with family here while having some medical needs addressed. This week we covered "Counting the Cost." One of the concerns that this woman has is her ability to worship once she returns home. You see, there is no New Testament church anywhere near her home. Also, this woman is not able to read, so she cannot study the Bible independently. She seems determined to become a Christian, but she understands that there may be some difficulty involved as a result. Another scenario - Jenny recently studied ... read more

From time to time we are asked over to have dinner in homes of our Tanzanian Brethren and we love sharing this time of fun and family fellowship. A normal meal will consist of beans, rice, chapati, and some form of vegtables... greens or a mixture of other foods together... This week with the Rachels being here we had all been invited over to two different homes. The home of Josphpat & Anna Massawe and their 3 children and Elijah & Mama Judy's home with their 3 children as well, which is the house behind John Hall's home. Each one of the families were very gracious and hospitable in feeding our large families and its such a humbling and honorable experience to know what they have sacrificed in order to have you in their homes. ... read more
