Despite being able to sleep in this morning for a later departure we really couldn't. Matt & I got around and then went out to the overlook area to enjoy a cup of coffee and take in the view one last time. This has been a wonderful place to stay! Breakfast was really great as well which was very welcomed. We loaded up the Land Cruiser and headed west to the far reaches of the park for our last two nights (boo!). The drive took about 4 hours with some stops here and there for animals but overall was super enjoyable!!! The roads seemed great compared to 90% of what we've traveled on and it's a very hot day, so standing with the wind whipping around you is refreshing! Throughout our trip it is very ... read more

SUNDAY: We were in for a full day of driving as we hit the road and headed back to Ngorogoro's rim to make our way towards the great Serengeti National Park. Ngorogoro Conservation used to be a part of Serengeti but was separated when it became the UNESCO World Heritage site, so we had to drive around the rim to get to the other side and make our way down. We hit the main "highway" leading out of the conservation and this is where I should mention that VERY few roads in Tanzania are paved. There are a few reasons...the first is money, they just don't have the funds to pave. The second is that many are against paving as it disrupts the animal migrations and more animals are killed due to speeding on paved roads. ... read more

Day 4 (Nov 3) Manyara Lake NP - Good news, I wake up with some feeling in my hand and could ALMOST hold a water bottle without dropping it. Bad news, Angie picked up a cold through our travels. We start off our safari with a two hour drive to Manyara Lake NP for a taste of the safari life. First wild animal was the water buck. Followed by multiple types of monkeys and baboons. Continuing on we came across a dozen zebra, wildebeest, and elephants (our first "big five"). Throw in a few warthogs, ostrich, hippos and numerous birds and you have yourself a pretty good day, including a nice lunch with a great view. Highlight being the elephants coming within a few meters of the jeep. We ended the day driving up the cliff ... read more

From Cape Town I flew into Dar es Saleem and I was very glad to have had a driver booked. The airport was absolute bedlam! The driving was as crazy as I expected and I was grateful to get to my accommodation for some peace and quiet. The Acacia Africa truck where I would be joining a tour for the next 26 days was not here yet so I settled into the beach front bar for the afternoon. When the truck did pull up, I introduced myself to everyone and enjoyed a drink with them before an early night as it would be an early start as we headed off to Zanzibar. Morning did come far too quickly and we joined what seemed like half of Dar es Saleem in jumping on various ferries to get ... read more

After the wonderful adventure of climbing Kili, I decided to go on a 4 day safari. We first went to the Serengeti parc, the Ngorongoro crater and finally the Lake Manyara. I went again with Focus in Africa and we were lucky to be just a group of 4, with who it went on very well. Our guide was Hermann and we also had our cook William. Hermann was brilliant, great eyes and so always spotted the hidden animal. We saw all the big five, as well as Shita's chasing a rabbit, a leopard and many other species. And after these exiting days, we were always very happy to come back to excellent food, happily cooked by William. I will let you enjoy the pictures !!... read more

Went through Serengeti again. Saw 3 cheetahs and 1 leopard and lions!!! How exciting! Went to the Ngorongoro crater place. Saw many many wildebeest and zebras. Managed to see lions and hyenas and buffalos and elephants...OH and 1 RHINO!!! (far, but still identifiable) So, I managed to see the big 5 today. How cool is that! The hotelish-resort today is the best so far. It's a proper room, as opposed to the tent. My guide insists on bringing me to see some craft stuff and tanzanite tomorrow. I'm not interested in these types of stuff at all. Oh well, I supposed I should humour him, see as he keeps telling me how he always tries to do his best for me. Animals 10. Took forever to reach the Serengeti National Park via Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which by the way, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The driver said that I should have taken a picnic lunch to save time, but how the hell would I know that. The place I'm staying is a tent again and as I'm writing this I can hear and feel the wind around me. It all seems a bit dodgy. Did you know, medical students like to make lists? I think it's good practice so here goes nothing. Animals I saw 1. Giraffes 2. Elephants 3. Hyena 4. Impala 5. Topi 6. Mongoose 7. Marabu stork 8. Hippos 9. Lions Fun facts 1. Hunters have this term called the 'Big 5': elephants, lions, cheetahs, rhinos and buffalos. They are the most dangerous and difficult ... read more

Total Distance Travelled Today: 292 km Elapsed Travel Time: 11 hours 11 min (including game drive) Lodging for the Night: Dik-Dik Campsite Our first night camping in Africa was not bad at all. Unfortunately we both awoke at 3 am and were not able to get back to sleep - a bad case of jetlag as a result of sleeping during the day on our first day. It was okay because breakfast was at 7 so we only had 3 hours to wait for our 6 am alarm to go off. After breakfast we had to repack some of our gear into one bag, and we transferred some of our things from our large gadventures truck into two smaller safari jeeps that we're going to use for the next 3 days. There was 6 of us ... read more
