Today started off with Anthony and Shasta Brown and Sean Hochdorf coming over to the house. They brought some wood from Arusha for Brent to cut with his new tools, so they could build some shelves for the house. The Samford’s, one of the missionary families here got their container from the states and the Richardson’s had some supplies on the container as well. Most of it consisted of peanut butter and Brent’s tools…some other stuff too but those were the most exciting things. So while the guys stayed at the house cutting, hammering and building with Brent’s new tools, us girl decided to go to the Nursery School. So Julie, Shasta, Emily and I loaded up in the Brown’s truck and drove to Boma Ngombe, the village that the Nursery School is in. This was Shasta’s first time out to the school so she was really excited about it. We arrive to greatest sight you could see, little smiling faces happy to see you. I could not even get out of the car before they were hugging on me and giving me kisses. I just love it! Julie and Shasta went and helped in the Baby class while Emily
and I went and helped in the Junior class. We went through the kids colors and main body parts like we usually do but we absolutely love to sing songs with them. So the majority of the time we are busting out in song with all the kids! After class we have a break and the kids get to go outside to play, run around and release some energy. We played and sang outside with them for about 30 minutes and then it was time to line up for the Bible story. Today I taught them about Abraham going to offer Isaac as a sacrifice to God on the mountain. I had a felt board and figures, so as I told the story Emily put the figures up on the board for me. After the story the kids said the Tanzanian National Anthem and then they took off running as fast as they could to go home. All the kids leave at 12:30 except for the Standard 1 class, they stay until 3:30. So I went in to teach them the Bible story after the rest of the kids left. Its always good to end the day talking and learning
about God. The kids sang their goodbye song to us and we left the school with the biggest smiles on our faces. The drive home was fun, being able to spend some time with Shasta and just talking it up, the way we always do when we get together.
Anthony, Shasta and Sean left after we got back and then it was time to get back in the house. About that time Brent and Julie got a call to go visit a couple from church here in Moshi. So they left and the kids and I stayed at the house to play and watch some movies while they were gone. When they got back, I heard Julie in the kitchen yelling,”Callie come in here!” So I went in there to see what she needed and there is Julie in the kitchen holding 2 guinepigs in her arms and one huge live duck in a bag. I just started laughing and asking, why in the world they brought them home and what had happened. Come to find out Africans give a little different gifts than we usually do in America. So, here we are in the kitchen with these animals
THE ANIMALS!
Garrett and Emily with the guinepigs and Julie in the middle holding the duck. that have been given to us as gifts and we are all laughing hysterically at the situation. But instead of killing and eating the duck ourselves Brent and Julie went down the road and gave it to an African family who needed it more than us. It gave them some food and saved us from having to kill and pluck a duck. The 2 guinepigs however are in Garrett’s room, we are keeping them as pets for the kids. When Brent and Julie got back from giving the duck away, they were both laughing as they walked in the house. Julie began to tell me that the duck had bit her on the toe while they were driving to give it away. Oh what a day! How is that for a story to tell! What can I say….THIS IS AFRICA!!!
