07.06.07 6:00 in the morning we left the African Parks house in Kalabo for the ride home. Still pitch black outside we navigated withy GPS to the entrance of the dirt road that would lead us back to Sitoti and further to Katima Molilo (Zambian Side). There is no petrol station before Livingstone at all, so we calculated hard and decided we would make it. Well, we arrived on the vapour in Livingstone. What a ride again. A shortcut turned out to be waterlogged and we had to double back another 50 Km through very deep sand. Once again, the local people are openly friendly and helpful. Sitting on our bonnet an old man directed us through thick bush and sandy foot paths to a track that eventually would connect to a more recent track. ... read more

Hi everyone, Sorry I've been so useless at updating this site but I only get internet access once a week and the connection is so slow I only just have time to check emails etc. So we've been in our camp in the village of Mvae for 2 weeks now. When I say village it's more of a large rural area. There is a small village centre consisting of a few mud hut shops...one of which doubles as a bar big enough for 4 people, I kid you not. Suz, Ed and myself tested it out after getting a bit lost on a walk the other day! Very bizarre experience sitting in the tiniest 'pub' in the world drinking beer mid-afternoon with one of the local schoolteachers on his lunchbreak while half the village peered in ... read more

Hey everyone! So here is email number one. I have arrived safely and completed my first couple days in Tanzania. Yes the flight was very long….I'm glad to be here finally. I think I will be sending out an email every week or so - if that's too often feel free to delete it and if it's not often enough I might be adding additional entries to a blog which I will send out the address later (maybe). So far I have spent a night in Dar Es Salaam, the commercial center of Tanzania, met my family and moved into my room. Dar is an expansive but rather short city (in terms of buildings). My window for the night was on the seventh story of a hotel, which was probably the tallest building around. I had ... read more

J' estais tres absorber peut-on croire!

Another early 4am start, but at least this time the temperature was refreshingly chilled. We had a 10 hour drive to Dar es Salaam on Tanzania's East Coast. An amazing drive through Iringa and huge teak plantations and green everywhere. Gemma spent a few months here back in 1999 studying the impact of these teak plantations on the native forest so it was interesting for her to see the changes since then (more tarmac roads and more litter). In Dar es Salaam we had a couple of hours to wander around before catching a ferry across the river to our campsite. It's an Islamic place and noticeably so with all the women covered up, a bit like Rusholme in Manchester. We went to the ATM to withdraw 500,000 of the local currency shillings. Finally we ... read more

Preface It has been too long since I added another chapter to this blog. My excuse is that I have been burdened with work and writing presents another labour. Not to mention Iran blocking travelblog.org! This is likely my last entry from Tanzania 2006 and fills the gap between Zanzibar and Tanganyika. The three short journals are but fragments of my experience and there is more that could be told but there is more travel to be done. The bit in-between Leaving Amani, I found myself on the same buses on which I had come: Ndio Zetu to Muheza and then Tayassar to Chalinze. Here the bus turned left towards Dar es Salaam and the driver made an impromptu stop for me to jump off. After a quick lunch, I boarded a no-name minibus to Morogoro. ... read more

I have been to some of the great wild life areas of Africa like the Kruger National Park, the Okavango delta and many others. I had even visited the Serengeti plains, the Ngorongoro crater and Lake Manyara but I had never before been to Selous. Selous is a massive park, bigger even than Kruger and 2 years older. It is pronounced ‘se loos’ and was named after an English soldier, Frederick Courtney Selous, who was shot in the park during a skirmish with German soldiers in World War One. Just like many of my destinations of the past few months, I arrived in Selous quite by accident. I was speaking, on Skype, to my mother about my plans for the next few weeks. It turned out she would be in Tanzania (working for the breweries here) ... read more

So where am I going, well the project is based in the Kilombero Valley, which lies between the Selous Game Reserve to the east, the Udzungwa Mountains Natyional Park to the north and the Mahenge Mountains to the South; if you look on a map the middle of no where! The Kilombero River forms part of Africas largest river basin, joining the the Great Ruaha, Rufiji and Luwegu rivers. The southern end of the valley is a Game Controlled Area and contains populations of elephants, buffalo, lion, zebra, antelopes and crocodiles, plenty of opportunity for me to get eaten then! The project will focus on developing an understanding of the relationship between the Kilombero Valley's fauna and flora and the local population, with a view to guiding/educating the locals on how to manage the natural resources ... read more
