On my coach ride north I had time to contemplate what little I had learned about South Africa in my short stay there and I thought I would share this with you... Firstly SA is a beautiful country with a lot to offer virtually any one. Its also a relatively safe country if you act in a sensible way and listen to the people who live there. The people are welcoming and helpfull and like every where in the world if your willing to open your eyes and ears a little you will always be amazed. SA does have its problems though. There is a hangover from appartied as well as, in my opinion, a clumsily implemented affirmative action campaign that has marginilased the white and coloured populations of SA, resulting in what one person called ... read more

Feb 14-16 I left the Drakensbergs, and drove to Durban. I spent a couple of days at Umhlanga Rock, a very developped resort town on the Indian Ocean. It has white sand, sun, long beaches, warm ocean... It is a safe and pleasant place to kill a couple of days. I also visted Durban, which has a busy downtown, and an even busier Indian District, where there are market stalls in every sidewalk. It is an interesting place to loiter around. The Indian District is also the home of the Jumma Mosque, the southern hemisphere's biggest Mosque. It is completely surrounded by shops, I almost couldn't find the entrance. ... read more

So, I've been in Cape Town for 2 weeks now! Holy COW!!! I feel like I'm on vacation and according to my dad that's what it sounds like as well! Within the first 2 hours of being in Cape Town I was on my way to the top of Table Mountain. On the second day I was on the top of Lions Head and since I have been on a peninsula tour, toured Robben Island, visited a few townships, moved into my house, been to 4 beaches, walked the botanical gardens and there is still so much to do. Everyone has said that I will experience culture shock but it hasn't hit me yet The most "shocking" thing is the townships. Shack after shack with people in the streets everywhere because they can not get a ... read more

So many of you may be wondering why I seem to have all this time to write emails and post pictures. That would be because my university has decided to go on strike. Our entire first week of class has been put off due to a campus wide strike. In the scheme of a 6 week module, one week is quite alot. So i'm just chillin, trying to keep up on my reading, spending time writing these blogs. Strike seems to be quite the thing here in SA and everyone remotely connected to the university has jumped on the bandwagon. Nothing is open on campus, half the students can't register, its definitely something that would never pass in the states. The premise is that salaries only increased by 4% this year, while inflation went up by ... read more

February 14th, 2006, Happy Valentine day, Day 40 of our cruise of 105, Tristan de Cunha, U.K. 1500miles from South Africa, most remote island on earth, 3 days to South Africa, where it really starts for moi. Weather was perfect with sunny skies, light seas and balmy temperature, nice to get out and walk about. Fisherman get out on their boats only 40 days a year, because the sea here is usually sooo rough, this was one of the mild swell day; so we were so lucky to be able to get off the ship. We tendered in with the island Zodiacs as ours would have been destroyed in the surf. We were then allowed 1 hour on shore( maybe more), to see the homes of the 300 inhabitants of this island - 5 extended families ... read more

Two Hours after leaving Durbs I found myself in CT where the weather was pleasently hot but no where near as humid as Durban. Ahhh I wouldn't need to wash my clothes every 10 minutes on account of them going damp with sweat. Ahhh. Cape Town. So many things to do. Robben Island. Table Mountian, Cape Aguilar (Africa's southern most point) Cape Point (where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet), Shark Diving... First up was baggage claim then the trip to Ashanti where I was to spend the next three nights. Unlike the other places I had stayed at this was bigger and had more of a party atmosphere. The place was also and old converted colonial mansion house and had a 'funky' look to it. Also out of the back Bathroom you could see Table ... read more

Got a bit more of a tan this week..yes!!!! A friend who me and Kelly have made called Louise surprised us yesterday and took us out of Pretoria.thank God and she wanted us to see some townships. this was full on with shacks upon shacks, rubbish everywhere but the bizarre thing was that the people who lived in them looked clean and well dressed - i don't know how? Its crazy that you get so much poverty in one part and then all of a sudden 2 mins down the road there are well off people and gorgeous houses...can't quite get over that! Had a lime milkshake yesterday- it was stunningly lekker (nice) had never tried one before. the weather here is mad with huge raindrops one minute then glorious sunshine the next and massive clouds ... read more

Feb 13 Happy Valentine’s Day everyone; the shops here seem to be as eager to get your chocolate covered money as anywhere else in the Westernized world. Everywhere I go there are teddy bears and specials on pink lingerie…just like home. Weather: still lovely. Views: still beautiful. Still messing around with various bits of paperwork: I WILL get Internet access this week, I am DETERMINED.* It’s been a rough week for Maggie; while she had been feeling reasonably confident of her schoolwork, she was also beginning to challenge the system, in some ways without even realizing it. Still, I think that the whole experience will be incredibly important in her growth, and she still amazes me with her insight and logic. She seems to be making friends; was invited out by some girls Friday night and ... read more

Feb 10-13 On February the 10th, I rented a car, and left Jo'burg for the Northern Drakensberg. That was an adventure in itself: driving manual, driving on the left and driving in Johannessburg without a map. It took me more than an hour to get out of the city, and it was not because of the traffic. Anyway, I arrived safely at the Amphitheatre Backpacker, situated near the Royal Natal National Park in the Northern Drakensberg. On February the 10th, I went on an organized hike to the top of the Amphitheatre, one of the spectacular peak of the Drakensbergs. It was a good hike, unfortunately it was very foggy (or was it the clouds) but it was hard to see anything. Too bad, we should have seen one of the tallest waterfalls in the world ... read more
