01 Fowl
A Crested Guinea Fowl we saw on our drive. Geo: -28.2173, 32.5168
This morning I was woken up by Paul at 4:45am. He informed me that he was going fishing. I went back to sleep. The tent was bright, but it was still too early to get up. Out the back window I could see that it was a grey, overcast day at this stage. I then lay in bed and did some reading. Outside I could hear monkeys raiding the campsite - the bin and picking up various things looking for food. I then slept a bit more.
I woke up to the sound of rain falling on the tent, I had to get out and zip up the back window because I didn't want our bed getting wet! The chairs and wood had to be moved out of the rain. I did some more reading...there was not much else to do with the rain!
Paul returned at 7:45am from fishing. He did not have much luck with his fishing. We spent the next hour and a half in the tent due to the rain. It finally stopped raining at 9:30am. Then got up and showered. As we ate breakfast, we could see bushbucks and we were watched by the monkeys-
02 Buck & Fowl
A female bushbuck and a crested guinea fowl. both Vervet and the larger Samango varieties. This gave Paul a chance to use his water gun and it seemed to scare them.
Even though it was wet and miserable we decided to go for a game drive. Firstly we drove Grassland Loop Rd which joined back onto the main road. On this loop drive, we drove past lakes, wetlands, swamp forest, dunes and various animals. There were many hippos in the waters of Manyamanya Pan and Lake Bhangazi.
At the swamp forest we saw kudus and waterbuck. Further along the road we stopped and admired the Red Dunes, an unexpected sight of a long red sand dune. On the other side of the road of the dunes we saw a large herd of buffaloes with a few zebras in between. We then stopped to watch a couple of warthogs eating grass.
Back on the main road we turned off and drove along the Dune Loop, which was a nice, but quiet drive. We also saw red duiker and reedbuck. Hardly any birds were seen on our drive due to the strong wind.
We arrived back at our camp at 1:30pm. As we drove past the shop we noticed a pair of cheeky
03 Lonely Buffalo
A lonely dagga boy sitting on the ground. monkeys raiding the bin. The monkeys would pull out the rubbish, not find food and then drop the rubbish on the ground. There were many Vervet Monkeys around.
Upon our return we noticed some strange sights around our tent- my toiletries had been strewn all around. A monkey had ripped the flyscreen of the tent and gotten in, stolen some toiletries and then realised that they were not edible. This was really annoying, as they had ripped two big holes in our tent and have been jumping all over our bed. We collected our things and decided not to keep toiletries in the tent. Lucky me had the job of stitching up the fly screen – damn monkeys!
For lunch we lit some charcoal and had toasted sandwiches, which were perfect in the cool, overcast weather. As we ate, we observed a couple of shy bushbuck walk past. We spent time relaxing at the camp site. Later on in the afternoon at about 4:30pm we went to the beach. Paul fished while I lay on the sand and did some reading and took a long walk. He had some luck and caught a little Pompaneo.
We had a barbecue again
