I have had a fantastic week on projects and almost can’t believe how much I have packed in! I’ve loved working with some of my fellow volunteers at Inkanyezi Crèche, and the children are really starting to make progress. It constantly amazes me how quickly they learn new concepts, and how much joy they take from their learning; even if it is only making the letter ‘A’ from a pipe cleaner! I am also still surprised by how placid the children are; between activities they simply wait to take direction from the older children or the teachers. This is pretty amazing, especially considering some of the children are only 2 or 3 years old, and I love that they don’t express the desire to be constantly entertained - they simply ‘take it all in’. I spent the most amazing week in Vilanculos, meeting up with many of my friends there and simply enjoying being back in this beautiful beach town...! It really feels like home to me, and even now being in St. Lucia I miss it!! The journey from Vilanculos to Johannesburg was smooth and uneventful. I stayed in a lovely hotel in Johannesburg on Monday 16th July, although it felt strange to be surrounded by modern amenities, the busy roads of Johannesburg etc., which reminded me again how easily I settle in to a much simpler African lifestyle... I arrived at St. Richard's Bay on Tuesday 17th, and was immediately welcomed by the co-ordinator at the airport. The drive from St. Richard's Bay to St. Lucia was very interesting- roads lined with trees for the paper mills, the ... read more

Heute war Reisetag angesagt, also wieder packen. Also weiter nach St Lucia, unserem eigentlichen Ziel.

K - It is 4 weeks and over 8,000KM since my last blog as Namibia and Botswana are not the easiest places to get connected - at least not when camping. It has been a great few weeks and we have really enjoyed the long drives through beautiful, remote countryside and our camping adventure. We quickly got in to the rhythm of setting up camp and cooking al fresco and disasters have been few - OK, so we flooded a campsite on our second night with a 10 foot water spout but hey, they should put the water pipes lower than a tent peg depth right?! The campsites we have stayed at have all been amazing - whether in size and facilities (posher bathrooms than we have at home!) to basic sites in beautiful, isolated locations ... read more

Barbara & John in Kwa Zulu Natal (KZN) We have spent two weeks in KZN and it has been a varied period covering wonderful scenery, cultural interest and good beaches. My birthday saw us on the road to Ramsgate on a 9 hour journey. It was good to be leaving what I thought was quite a strange farm and farmer’s wife. The view over the dam and hills set in a lovely garden was very picturesque but I will always remember the haunting feeling in the creaky floored bedroom. Despite the fact that we were out of the highland area the scenery at times was stunning. Our first day in Ramsgate was for chill, spending some time on a private beach. Our second day was at the Oribi Gorge. We thought this might only take a ... read more

St. Lucia is a small town on a wetland estuary on the coast of the Indian Ocean. We stayed at a lodge for 3 nights surrounded by a tropical jungle environment. We didn't dare leave our door open too long or we could have some unwelcome visitors in our room.....lizards, insects, monkeys etc. It was actually a great place! The mosquitoes here are very quiet and small and they don't buzz around but while I was sitting outside posting my blog I must have been bitten many times because when I got up in the morning my legs were covered with bites. We went on a boat trip on the nearby river which runs into the ocean. We saw several hippos and a few crocodiles and many different birds such as cranes, storks, herons and fish ... read more

Here I am, finally in South Africa! Despite the best efforts of BA I touched down in Durban yesterday to the miracle of Bri still being at the airport to pick me up! Note to self, from now on have all phone numbers on self at all times as internet is not easy to find in airports. I should explain, and to all of you grumbly about my Business Class treat, don't worry, the air travel gods got me back good. I did make it back to Heathrow in plenty of time for my flight, especially since it was an hour late leaving. There was some problem with the electronic baggage reading system so everything had to checked by hand. You can imagine our comfort level as this was announced as we were all already sitting ... read more

HeyheyheyyyY!!! I'm back in South Africa after traveling through Mozambique and Swaziland. I loved both countries but they were so different. Mozambique was beautiful tropical beaches with clear aqua blue water. We spent 3 days on the beach staying in dorms. While there I met 4 people from Buffalo! One of them went to Casey Middle School where I went to school. Such a small world. I went on a Ocean Safari with the people from Buffalo and a few people from my tour. I've never gotten sea sick before but within 15 minutes of sitting on the small motor boat with 3 meter waves I was soo sick. By the end of the trip 5 out of the 10 people on the boat were sick. To not feel sea sick we were told to look at ... read more
