So the touring portion of my trip is over and I am in the midst of a week on my own. It has been quite a difficult transition, actually, as I made some excellent friendships in the past few weeks. Nonetheless, I shall survive. Here's what I've been up to for the past few days. July 20 was rafting day in Livingstone! 8 of us from the GAP group went and we were happy to be put in the same boat with a guide named Davis. The training was interesting (i.e. what to do if you fall out and are beside the boat, what to do if you fall out and start floating uncontrollably down the river, etc.) as was the walk down the gorge. This was harder than the rafting itself! I forget how far ... read more

Chintsa (pronounced sint-za, and also spelled Cintza) is a small town at the beginning of the Wild Coast, an aptly named raw and remote stretch of beaches, mostly untouched and stunningly beautiful. History and circumstance seem to have conspired to save the Wild Coast from development but one must assume it can't be too far off. It is an unfortunate truism that land that looks like this doesn't stay undeveloped for long. Luckily for those who live here, there seem to be many rules and regulations regarding development desinged to protect the natural beauty and ecosystems found in the region, and the indigenous populations that have called it home through the centuries. Chintsa marks the beginning of these miles upon miles upon miles of secluded, hard to reach, empty white beaches on the warm Indian Ocean, ... read more

Hi everyone! It's been awhile since I've written! After I finished my bungy in Stormsriver I had a bit of a tough week----for anyone who doesn't know, before I left the optometrist discovered I had a torn retina, which he lasered and fixed, and told me to come back once I was done in Africa. A couple weeks into my trip, however, I started seeing 'flashers and floaters,' which means retina trouble, so I went spent my time in jeffreys Bay and Port Elizabeth seeing optometrists and opthamologists, who found 2 small tears which they fixed for me. It was really cheap compared to what it would cost in Canada, but still made me grumpy! And insurance won't cover it! Anyways, not a big deal, but it put things on hold for a bit---at least it ... read more

Well we had planned to get to East London and then get the bus to Coffee Bay but we discovered it was quicker to have the shuttle take us to a place called Cintsa and get on the baz bus there. They left us at a hostel called Buccaneers which looked amazing and we were a bit gutted we hadn't decided to stay there. An american guy who works there told us that we had loads of time before the bus was going to pick us up and that it would probably be here at 12:30 - 1pm, so we left our bags and walked down to the beach front for a paddle, however when we got back to the hostel the bus had already been!! It had come at 12pm......so we were a bit disappointed ... read more

Sorry everyone, its been a while since our last blog in Oudtshoorn. From Oudtshoorn we travelled to Wilderness, Plettenberg Bay, Storms River, Jeffreys Bay, Port Elizabeth and now to Cintsa. At Wilderness, Plettenberg Bay, and the famous surfers spot Jeffreys Bay we spent time battling the winds whilst collecting shells on the beaches. Storms River is known for the worlds highest bungee jump at approx 216m, its also next to Tsitsikama National Park where you can take a zip line through the canopy. These activities were too expensive for our liking so we chose to hire some bikes instead and ride through the park to where the river meets the sea - Storms River mouth. An easy 22km ride through the rainforest with a stunning view at the end. We also had the pleasure of ... read more

We drove down to the "Wild Coast", which meant we drove through large sections of the Transeki - the Xhosa homelands - hill after hill after hill covered in huge numbers of small black homesteads, and many of these hills were far too steep to farm. No idea how the people manage in these areas. The beach at Port St. Johns was lovely, we only had to share it with one other person as we played in the relatively warm waves. No development at all along this section of the coast. Lots of rumors that this would soon change. We then moved onto Cintsa, a more developed area with a few holiday homes on the beach. But the beach was enormous, really really wide and stretching far further than we could walk. Had to share it ... read more

Cintsa was yet another place that many travellers we'd met had told us that we must visit. Fortunately by now we'd learnt to keep our expectations low so as not to be disappointed when these places weren't all they were cracked up to be. We were very happy however before we even arrived as from the shuttle we saw our first game sighting of the trip, a couple of zebra, wildebeast and bonking giraffes! When we read a sign at reception saying not to panic if you found a snake in your bed we breathed a sigh of relief that our tent was so far snake proof! Buccaneers was the BP we stayed in and it was an awesome place set on a massive property between the beach and lagoon and only a stones throw from ... read more

Greetings Peeps, I have commenced my travelling with a short stay in Johannesburg, which I found to be a little daunting for a traveller on ones own… and this because I met a guy from Manchester in my Dorm, soon after I arrived, and he told me how he had just been mugged on his way to the hostel (a road near the main train station)!! That hardly made me want to venture into the centre of the city. But cities are cities hey and girls will be girls or something like that! My first planned stop was at the Drakensberg region between Jo’berg and Durban and good gravy Marie that took my breath away. The mountain range of Drakensberg, which I’d not heard of before researching South Africa (look it up if you’re bored!) is ... read more

From Hogsback we travelled to Cintsa to a huge hostel called Buccaneers of which we had heard great things. It was the gateway to the Wild Coast or Transkeii part of South Africa which was from what I understood pretty much an independant state during Aparteid and run by the non white native people - like Zululand. Upon arrival we promptly went on a tour to a local school where they put on one of their weekly concerts for the backpackers who by donating after the concerts pretty much fund the school with the help of volunteers from a German school. The kids from the school ranged from 4 to 15 by the looks of it and sang their hearts out for about 2 1/2 hours. It was amazing. They were all very enthusiatic and fun. ... read more
