There was a treat for us for the first 180k of our journey today, it was on a tarmac road! But in one respect it was the same as gravel, hardly any traffic on one of Namibia’s major routes. About 10 vehicles during its entire length.

We had a coffee and apple cake, one of the local staples, at the delightful and amazingly remote Seeheim Hotel before facing another 100k of gravel which took us to our last major feature of our stay in Namibia, Fish River Canyon.

Fish River Canyon is 161k long, up to 27k wide and 550m at its deepest. It reminded me of Arizona’s Grand Canyon, but being only about one third of its depth it was much easier to see the river snaking along the bottom of this superb natural feature.
