About 500 million years ago the Fish River Canyon started forming when a fracture in the rock structure formed a broad valley which was deepened 200 million years later by the glaciers of the Dwyka Ice Age. Following further erosion and about 50 million years ago the Fish River started to cut its meandering way along the valley floor to form the two level canyon we see today.

This morning we drove the 10k from the campsite to the edge of the canyon to be amazed by the sights highlighted in the early sunshine.

Then it was a 70 k journey to the canyon’s southern end at the spa resort of Ai Ais.

The rest of the day was spent enjoying the pools filled with naturally warmed spa water followed by a short walk along the dried up bed of The Fish River as it leaves the canyon.
