Many of the roads in Namibia are gravel and we had a brutal introduction to them today. Vehicles travelling along them form corrugations in their surface and we drove for 100k along minor roads which had not been smoothed out. Consequently it was a long bone shaking experience for us and the van whilst our speed was restricted to about 30kph.

The reason for putting ourselves to this ordeal was to visit several famous Namibian sites and we also passed through magnificent Damaraland mountainous countryside. On reflection we thought it was worthwhile, but not all the party agreed. We visited:

A forest of petrified trees formed 260 million years ago.

The Living Museum of Damara where local villagers have constructed a small village to showcase their culture.

A valley of tall angular columns of dolerite called the Organ Pipes.

The 6000 year old animal rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, a world heritage site.

The whole expedition took us over 12 hours and we were pleased that the local restaurant in our destination town of Uis had a prearranged meal awaiting us.
