Our first full day in Namibia and certainly a day of firsts. We woke up this morning well before the alarm finally feeling refreshed after the 22 hours spent travelling. After a lovely breakfast this morning we headed off from Windhoek and leaving the metalled roads just outside of the capital, we hit the gravel. Well not literally, but swayed and swung along, catching sight of ostrich, baboons and the most fantastic weaver bird nests that seemed to consist of colonies of birds rather than the single nests we had seen in South Africa a couple of years ago. We also came across a cross at he side of the road as a memorial it does make you think that if something did go wrong out here you are a long way from any assistance. Then ... read more

So here we are approximately 4,000 miles from home. We left at 5:30pm yesterday and arrived in our guest house 22 hours later, after 12 hours flying on two flights, 8 hours waiting around airports (but we did have a lovely meal in Gordon Ramsey’s Plane Food at Heathrow terminal five) and two taxi journeys, we are ready to start our holiday and by now we are more in need of one than when we left. Our transport has arrived, a new Ford Ranger double cab complete with two spare wheels for the inevitable punctures (or so we have been told). As I suspect we will be spending a lot of time in this over the next two weeks we hope a very reliable car. We took the car out and successfully negotiated navigating in Windhoek, ... read more

It was another full day on the road getting from Maun to Windhoek. I was up at 7 a.m. to pack my tent away, which was one of the coldest experiences I have ever had. I thought my fingers were going to fall off from frost bite. As I said in the previous post, Botswana public transport is not too plentiful, so I made sure I was on the bus to Ghanzi at 8.30 a.m., where we arrived at around 1 o'clock. To get to the Namibia border, I needed to get to a place called Charles Hill. After some confusion, as to whether the bus was actually going or not, I managed to get on a bus, which arrived in Charles Hill at around 5. Charles Hill is the very definition of a one horse ... read more

Up at a leisurely time this morning and a nice breakfast at Elegant House in Windhoek. Laston picked us up for the transfer to Na'ankuse where we discovered one of our photo tour group had already checked in and was on a feeding tour of the animals. This is an amazing place run by Marlice and Rudy van Vurren, but mostly it's Marlice who has a special relationship with the animals. They have many staff and lots of willing volunteers to lend helping hands for this huge menagerie that includes a pack of African wild dogs, lions, leopards, cheetahs, baboons, caracals and a huge assortment of farm animals. For anyone traveling to Namibia, we highly recommend a visit to this magical place. It came to the media attention when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie visited and ... read more

Already we can see we’ve left the rough life behind. Our guest house, Elegant House, lives up to its name, and we are in the city of Windhoek, Namibia population 340,000. This morning, we arrange for a city tour, driven by Laston, who operates a transfer and tour service. The night before, we had missed him at the airport because our plane was early, and since no one was waiting for us, we left with a taxi driver who was available. So when Laston arrived expecting us, we had already left! Today, he starts by taking us to the pretty sights of Windhoek. It is Africa Day and all the shops are closed, but we are not interested in shopping anyway. As a side note, it turns out we should have done some shopping this day, ... read more

Wednesday...Bedtime...Blog. It is very strange to get ready for bed and then notice it is afternoon back home. We both adjusted really well to the time difference. Thank you crazy residency lifestyle and On-Call lack of sleep schedules. Being awake for 30 hours straight several times a week really has its benefits. Especially if you need to adjust to jet lag and work the next day. Seriously though, I do think our schedules and changing rotations every month really made adjusting to a new time-zone, a new home, and new work environment much easier. We both had another busy but great day at KSH (Katature State Hospital). If you missed our blog from yesterday, go back and read it, its good :-) Our morning started our with a busy rounds on my ward, and a not ... read more
