Yay, the cheetah park! It's been so long since we've seen big cats on this trip that we were super excited to get here. While, not quite what we expected (more of a farm for rescued cheetahs) it was fun and I think we got some nice photos that we could not have gotten of cheetahs in the wild. By the time we arrived at the park the sun was setting and we'd missed the cheetah tour and feeding for that day. We did, however, get to camp beside the enclosure holding a mom and three cute cubs. It was fun to watch them even though it was through a fence. The following afternoon we went for the tour and feeding. It started with a group of 3 tame cheetahs that we were able to pet. ... read more

Well these few days have been quite eventful.... After our bush camp with the scorpians we drove east inland through some gorgeous lushous hilly scenery to a ancient rock art site, called Twyfelfontein - some of the most extensive in Africa. The area was formed mostly of sandstone and was very red and dry, similar to the Northern Territory in Australia. We paid about 3 quid each for a local guide to show us around and explain the meanings of the images and symbols. Most of the rock art there is carved into flat surfaces of fallen rock from the surrounding hills. The carvings were made by the San people when they danced themselves into a trance and visited the spirits and their ancestors. Most of the carvings are of animals (giraffe, lionman (half man, half ... read more

The cheetah park is basically an enclosure where some german family grows cheetahs.. it is pretty cool to see cheetahs walking freely in the owner's house like house cats.. you can go up to them and pat them and touch them.. sometimes.. they would come up to you to lick you.. maybe tasting to see if you need some more seasonings before you are worthy for them to bite into you.. the cheetahs at the home gets aggrevated at times.. and the owner had to calm them down before we can approach them again.. After that it's back to the campsite bar.. where you wait till evening time to go out on the truck to feed the cheeetahs in the 'sanctuary'... so until then, you have nothing to do, so you buy some beer from them.. ... read more

May 8 Cheetah Farm We had a great sleep and slept in a little bit late to make up for the sleepless bus ride the night before. Charlene and Pete are great hosts. They make us feel at home. Dakotah especially felt at home because there was a bird there. Unfortunately the little guy died that night. Pete, Charlene’s husband, had to go North today to help with tiling the new Orphanage so he didn’t get to come on our adventures these next few days. Today we went out to the Cheetah farm outside of Okahandja leaving late morning. We had a flat tire (or TYRE as they spell it in Namibia) on the way, fixed that up while we ate really great Pizza. We got to the Cheetah place at quarter to 4pm and ... read more

After a not-very-good night's sleep in the cave we slept for most of the journey in the truck today, arriving just after lunchtime at the Cheetah Park. This is a refuge for cheetahs run by a real African character - an ex-hunter called Mario. A literal poacher turned gamekeeper due to him killing a cheetah who was causing havoc on a farm, later to find out that that cheetah was a new mother of 2 cubs who they took in and the refuge farm has grown ever since. We were basically forced to rehydrate our bodies with a couple of beers before visiting 3 tame cheetahs who live at his house. Mario is bald with a head covered in cheetah-inflicted scars, so we weren't exactly sure how tame he meant. We took turns to stroke ... read more

Breakfasted as day broke over the stunning Spitzkoppe mountains with he prospect ahead of 6-7 hours on the road. Within minutes of leaving we broke down with a re-occurrence of the brake problem - apparently the pin was welded rather than replaced and had snapped again. After a big delay we continued with one brake drum less. The roads were 95% dirt ones and particularly bone jarring. After two hours we got stuck in sand. Mwangi had encountered problems here on a previous trip and attempted with a run up to get through at speed but a large log flew up a banged the underside of the truck as we got stuck. It smashed off the number plate but luckily avoided hitting the radiator by inches. We would have been stranded if the radiator had ... read more
