Day 58 - Tofo - 25/9/09 Woke up a very sleepy Michelle at about 0430 to make sure she would be ready to catch the minibus. I, like always was up earlier then needed, I packed the final little bit into my rucksack and waited in the reception area for the shuttle bus to arrive. The driver came into the reception and beckoned everybody onto the minibus; we all pilled in and set off. We stopped off at the bus stop, I actually use the term bus station very loosely; actually it should be described as a car park with 100's of buses all parked up looking for passengers. We took our seats, leaving our bags on the ground outside, we sat there never seeing our bags being loaded and as a result spending the whole ... read more

Day 55 - Maputo (Mozambique) - 22/9/09 Woke up at 0700 because Michelle and French needed to leave by 0830 to get to the Mozambique High Commission to get their passport back with their visas. We jumped into the hire car and we were off, we headed down to Mbabane, I remained inside the car with bags whilst the others went and sorted out returning the hire car. This took a while as the hire company had charged French too much for something, I don’t know exactly what. Whilst they sorted this out I went across the road, I went a brought a Swaziland sticker for my work suitcase, I returned and nothing had been sorted. A few heated words were spoken but the company stood firm. We paid and went up to the bus stop, ... read more

Geo: -18.777, 34.4751We had a lazy start before we decided to head out to the Park to look for elephants. The camp owner turned up to say good morning and to see how we bedded down.. as it turned out he was actually 18 years old and had started this business with a couple of Mozambique doods.. well nearly started they were waiting for the final tick from the Tourist Branch of Mozambique, thus he said I cannot charge you however please feel free to donate some cash if you so please. For any body else heading this way go the Gorongosa National Park turn off (8km south of Gorongosa) then head in for approx 10Kms, look for a funny Blue sign near the old school (if you get to the metal bridge then you have ... read more

Geo: -18.777, 34.4751We had planned for an easy days drive to the National Park called Gorongosa about 350Kms from Inharroso..easy.. we consulted the map and the Southern Africa road atlas and decided on a route which included approximately 70kms of minor roads right at the end. We arrived and turned onto the minor road and headed to the next town called Blue Maria??? The track stared well then slowly deteriorated into a winding smaller track..We picked up a local wanting a lift, he sat on top of the spare tyre that is mounted on the back door of the Shorty.. No worries all were happy.. Not long after our passenger alighted the track went through a small river and then really started to get narrow.. I mean so narrow the grass as being pushed out of ... read more

Hello Everyone! It's been a while since our last entry. Sorry no pictures right now, the computer here won't let Aaron download any photos. We've been kicking back on the beach in Mozambique. Our friend Martina owns a Nissan repair shop in Vilankulos and we stayed with her for almost a month. She is so much fun, we had a great time. It was really nice to just be in one spot for a while, also. Since she let us stay for free, we tried to cook some really nice meals for her. Which was fun and challenging. Aaron loves to cook and it was challenging because she currently only has an electric skillet, a George Foreman grill, and a microwave until her house remodeling is complete. But we managed to turn out some decent meals. ... read more

Geo: -23.8556, 35.5481Long day in the saddle saw us head into Zarao following the promise of camp sites. Arrived and checked in, setup the RTT (Roof Top Tent) with a view straight out onto the sea not less than 50 mtrs away. The camping fees were expensive at $240 meticals (about $10 AUD each) given the amenities were very simple. The hot water system worked fantastically once the gas burner fired up scolding water flowed forth and providing you were not standing in front of it helped kill off the mosquitoes.. very handy. We bumped into a Irish National who is now living at Zorao having setup a diving business with some Mozambique doods.. nice chap good for a chat and gave us some great tips. His biggest complaint to date was during the off season he ... read more

Geo: -25.7704, 32.6864 to panic.. it went on like this for some time. Low range was engaged and the tyres let down. All the time there was still no signs indicating we were going the correct way. (we have taken some video). Thankfully the GPS indicated we were still generally heading north which in this case this was good. The map we had loaded on the GPS indicated a road would start somewhere up ahead.. I was slightly sceptical and we stopped to ask some cattle Sheppard (yes I know a Sheppard is for sheep what do you call a cattle herder!!) After some time of repeating the name of the capital Mapito with various different inflections (trying to make it sound Portuguese) the chaps pointed straight ahead.. so off we went.. after 500mts on a ... read more

The conductor of my Maputo-bound minibus resembles Laurence Fishburne after a career change, and the sound system boasts an impressive array of Billy Ocean, Spagna, and even RAF, but I pay a high cost for these diversions via another hot, lengthy, cramped journey. There's no respite to the disappointment when we arrive in Maputo, with the city host to a series of overpriced hotels with limited availability. I find a room in a place recommended by S but can only take it for one night, and when I later stumble across a pensao with free Internet and availability for three subsequent nights I book a room sight unseen. I take merciless advantage of the fast web access to go on a photo uploading spree. Maputo has a tediously bad reputation for crime, and a warning notice ... read more
