dhow
a 33cent dhow(sailing craft) ferry ride. i was only passenger! this is now my phone wallpaper. love it. in malawi now. new phone number is 00265(country code) 5692755. c y'all soon.
CHAPA (crammed minibus) ride. once again, they tried overcharging the mulungu (whites and foreigners in this case), myself and two new friends, laura and gael. we left maixai (sc) for vilanculos, mozambique. we paid 300 mets. i felt it was wrong and during a stop i asked locals and found out it should have been 175Mts.
i told the conductor we were overcharged and know it. he said yes it is 175 Mts for ride and 100 for bags. don't know about his math but i still didn't buy it. i said we want 100 Mts back each (allowing 175 + 25 for bag). more than fair as locals don't pay for such baggage. he suddenly no longer spoke english. so i sat my bag on the seat and said i would take the entire seat for the duration of the ride and effectively blocked laura's seat as well. after some more chatter, where he spoke only to laura he said ok, ok we'll handle it. i took him at his word and moved my bag and body so that others could get on the
bus, opps forgot to tell you i wouldn't let anyone on. once, at destination there was a bit more chatter with the local tourist guides but we did get our 100 Meticais back.
ps: new term Assache=what one gets while spending hours crammed into a minibus. ie when i went from chimoio, mozambique to blantyre, malawi. time from door to door 17 hours.
CRAB BOIL: $6US bought crabs and fixin's for a feast. only because i sent a local from hotel to buy them. still, i fed 5.25 (gael took 1 hour to peel and eat 1 crab so he is the 0.25 person) people. then we made 3 crab omelettes for breakfast and i also had 3 crabs for a two day later dinner. no complaints, well just one. i did not put enough heat in the boil. can't win em all.
