There are numerous terms, of varying political correctness, to describe the stage of development of African countries. To give you an idea of where Mauritania is at, the election campaign pledge of the recently appointed president was “to stamp out slavery for good!” The slave trade was only outlawed here in 1980 but apparently it continues. Mauritania is a fascinating country to travel through, the population being some of the hardiest people on earth. After driving for hours through empty and unbroken sand seas you often come across small villages, desperately trying to stay afloat above the shifting sands. The villages consist of tents made from many individual patches of cloth looking like overgrown tortoises. hey everyone, it's being awhile since i last posted and alot of stuff has happened. after christmas i went back to my site for a month which is the longest i've being at my site without going into my regional capital. my freind from madden, which is two hours away from my site. he was on his way back to madden from atar and the taxi stopped at my town and he had to switch cars to go back to madden. he ended up staying at my place for a day or two and everyone in my village assumed we were married. when they found out that we were not married they all said that we should get married. dealing with marriage proposals is one of the annoying things about being in mauritania. most men that ... read more

Vandaag gaan we richting Chinguetti een rustplaats voor de vroegere kameel karavaans richting het zuiden of richting Mekka, het begin van de ''echte'' Sahara, zoals iedereen hem kent met z'n eindeloze zandduinen. Rond negen gaan we richting ''garage Chinguetti'' de verzamelplaats van pick-ups richting Chinguetti. Zoals gewoonlijk is het na de onderhandelingen over de juiste prijs wachten tot de pick-up vol zit, dat wil zeggen, twee mensen op de bijrijderstoel, vier mensen achterin en minimaal acht in de bak, het vullen van de pick-ups duurt meestal wel een paar uur, dus rond twaalven vertrekken we richting Chinguetti. De bak is afgeladen, met onze bagage, een paar dozen bananen, twee reserve wielen, twee geiten aan de zijkant gebonden, en boven op acht personen, waaronder ik dus. Om 8:45, wordt er op mijn deur geklopt, ik heb me verslapen, om 9:00u stap ik verkreukeld in het oude Nissan, minivrachtwagentje, we gaan eerst heel Dahkla door, om boodschappen te doen, olie bijvullen, tanken, thee halen, mint kopen, broodjes kopen, nog wat spullen laden, nog een tijdje wachten bij de politiepost, tegen de tijd dat we goed en wel op weg gaan richting Nouadhibou is het 11:00u, we rijden een uurtje, dan gaan we lunchen en dan kunnen we eindelijk opweg, ondertussen zijn we al bijna verdronken in de thee, de bijrijder maakt onder het rijden met een gasbrandertje tussen zijn benen de ene pot thee na de andere. As i mentioned in my last entry, i am a peace corps volunteer serving in mauritania. My site is called Aoujeft and it is in the northern part of the country, two hours away from the regional capital of Atar. It is a small site built on top of sand dunes. Quite alot of sand dunes actually which is not fun to walk in or when it is blowing fifty miles an hour because then the sand comes in my house. Think of a desert with tones of sand dunes and then picuture a city on top of that and you will have Aoujeft. I am speaking or trying to speak the local langauge Hassaniya and a bit of french mixed in as well. It is a dialect of Arabic and a very difficult langauge since ... read more
