Hi No photos today but just a quick update Life has been great. I have been working hard but playing equally hard, although I am glad I had my own holiday first beacuse it is hard work learning to be a tour guide with so much to remember. So far I have travelled from Jo berg via the okavango delta in Botswana. It was cool because we went out to an island in traditional dug out canoes (mokoros) and bush camped under the stars. We had elephants arount our campsite at night and in the morning one charged our campsite while we were having breakfast and we had to throw a burning stick at it scare it away. After that cool couple of days we went to the Chobe National Park for some game drives and ... read more

Ok so just in case you are kinda wondering why I'm posting this stuff it's cause we had VERY slow connection in Malawi so I decided to wait before posting the stuff I wrote... which I am doing now in Dubai. More pics to come!!!! Oct.24 - Wow. Where to begin. Since I left Montreal my life has been quite a sleepless adventurous daze. I was hoping to be able to post up pictures and thoughts every day during this trip, but that seems to be more and more unlikely…. I haven’t been able to connect my laptop to the Internet and I haven’t had the time to make it to an Internet café. Actually, I haven’t even been able to call anyone since I left Montreal. It’s quite frustrating; I feel like I have to ... read more

It was 8 months ago, back in Cape Town, that I last had a haircut, so I was due. The bus station barber in Blantyre was lacking in refinements such as scissors but did have the attachments for his trimmer. I settled for a number 2 all over and went from hippie to squaddy in a few short minutes. I generously tipped the barber to bring his fee up to 25p and then waited patiently until Linda had stopped laughing (4 days). Blantyre is a small and unremarkable city, setting the tone for most places in this country which also tend to be small and unremarkable. The exceptions are the touristic centres which are serene and beautiful. Malawi is exceptional though because of the easy warmth and friendliness of the people, who were always pleased to ... read more

25 in 30 minutes. 25 four wheel drive pickups and range rovers emblazoned with UNICEF, DFID, USAID, JICA, UNFPA, PACT, World Vision . . . Even the Icelandic Development Agency has two trucks in Lilongwe, and we saw a few in Monkey Bay as well. That means nearly a dollar from each of the 280,000 Icelanders just for the their country's truck stock in Malawi. OK, so maybe I cheated a little by planting myself at the corner of the South Africa headquartered shop-'til-you-drop superstore, Shoptrite, with a selection to dazzle any development worker, and prices to keep all but the top income decile of Malawians far far away. But sketchy sampling aside, this place is overrun with development trucks. They wind their way around Lilongwe, and from headquarters to home. Every once in a while, ... read more

We stopped en-route to Livingstone, a nice campsite with a pool, good bar and a family of lovely fox terriers, a nice change from the psychotic Jack Russell of the last place. After a couple of drinks at the bar we headed back to our tent followed closely by the mummy fox terrier. As soon as we had opened our tent she was in and getting comfortable on our sleeping bags, she ended up sleeping on Charmaine until dawn.... read more

After another long day in the truck and laborious border crossing we arrived at the first transit campsite en-route to Livingstone. This site was covered in lovely grass making a change from the usual dustbowls we stay in. The only notable moment of our stay here was the whole group playing with the totally crazy resident Jack Russell. This dog would fly headlong at anything he fancied chewing, like a snarling, tooth filled missile.... read more

Our last stop in Malawi and it is a beautiful one. Selima campsite is in the grounds of the lovely Meridian hotel. Lunch of bacon cheeseburgers was had on the veranda, they were awesome! After lunch and a bit of a rest we retired to the lake for a game of impromptu water volleyball (sort of), even Charmaine joined in! Darren stayed in the lake with Mark watching the Kingfishers dive into the lake around them as Charmaine had a shower and beautified herself. The sunset was lovely; this has to be one of the nicest places we’ve stayed. After much insistence by Charlie during our BBQ that night, we went to bed early, ready for the awesome sunrise the next morning. The wind woke Darren up at 4am, it was blowing a gale. Charmaine stayed ... read more
