Over a year after starting to apply for jobs in Africa and hundreds of emails later we've finally made it. We're not quite in the middle of nowhere/small district hospital or clinic as we origionally intended but are in a big busy hospital in a fair sized city full of ex-pats and bars. In true expat form we are now the employers of a gardener, maid and several guards- shared with our neighbours (obligatory apparently unless you enjoy being burgled repeatedly). We're installed in a house that has more bars on the windows/doors than most prisons, and have bought a car the size of a tank. We have taken to drinking gin and tonic to complete the image but have yet to obtain a pith helmet aka Livingstone et. al. - its only a matter of ... read more

Leg One: Harare to Blantyre: Bus Jas covered this trip pretty well but I think I would just like to mention that we had no money left and so no water or food. There were no bathrooms so it was probably a good thing...and even fewer stops. The boarder crossings were the most ridiculous things ever. After waiting about 30 minutes for everyone to cram back on the bus (the aisles were packed with goods), we would drive about 1 minute where everyone would take another 30 minutes to get off the bus. It made the journey especially long. At least the windows opened a bit though. Blantyre: Blantyre was our rest stop just to recover after the long bus joruney. Once again we ignored advice about an area being too dangerous and once again we ... read more

Well we decided to say goodbye to Zimbabwe, I'd love to go back one day if things change a bit. I might have neglected to mention how beautiful Zimbabwe is in my last blog, its Victorian buildings are really awesome coming in second place only to Cape Town so far and I regret not taking more pictures. We left Harare and ventured north yesterday on another terrible, terrible bus ride. We had arranged for a taxi driver to pick us up at the mansion of a hostel just outside of town and drive us through city center over to the other side where the market and buses are. The taxi driver was asleep in his ride when we went out to the gates just before 5am. Off we go across town! Finbar and Patrick came along ... read more

May 11, 2006 - Day 26 - The morning had another optional game drive or walk, but I decided no to do it. I woke up early and had to go to the bathroom, but could hear hippos that sounded awfully close, so I waited until Barbel was awake at 5:15am for her 6am walk and we walked to the bathroom together. Afterwards I got a bit more sleep. Had a morning shower, so rare for me, and some breakfast before breaking down the tent with Ashley’s help. We were supposed to stay at this campsite for two days, which would have been wonderful. I wanted to sit at the river and watch animals all day. But we have an Argentinean in the group and he needed to get a special visa sticker in his passport ... read more

Hello! After a great few days of relaxation in Zanzibar, we were off headed to Malawi and excited to get another new stamp in our passport. Bush Camping We left Dar es Salaam on the Tanzanian coast and had two and half days of driving to get into Malawi, which involved two nights of bush camping. Driving days consists of lots of reading, sleeping and staring out at the lovely countryside and people. Our first bush camp, we set up our tents and just as we were finishing, a jeep with two locals came up and told us it was government property and we would have to leave. Urgh! So we had to take down our tents, drive a ways down the road and then set up again in the dark! The next day, we drove ... read more

As proof that life ebbs and flows, after our easy bus trip from Blantyre to Lilongwe, we experienced a hellish 10-hour bus trip from Lilongwe to Mzuzu. Not only was it very long (it should have only been about six hours) but about seven hours into the trip, we stopped at a town and the bus got so packed that people were standing in the aisles and sitting on the backs of the benches. A lady with a chicken stood over Vicky which caused Vicky (the English Princess) to freak out for the rest of the three hour journey. In addition, a baby being held near Vicky peed on her. I laughed as, after having traveled in India, everything is EASY. After the hellish bus trip, the girls wanted no more "public transportation" and we took ... read more

After going through immigration and entering Malawi, the girls and I waited at border for a large bus to take us to Blantyre. But after we realized it would take forever for that bus to leave as locals had tons of crap they bought in South Africa and had to claim them at customs, we got into another crowed chapa for the 1.5-hour ride to Blantyre. We arrived at Doogles, a famous backpackers in Blantyre, and we secured some dorm beds. I was tired, sweaty and in need of a shower badly. The girls and I had a few beers at the bar and dinner before calling it a night early. Doogles did not provide mozzy nets and I did not have one. So I spent the night listening to mozzies buzzing by my head. I ... read more

After crossing the border from Tanzania, we spent a night in Mzuzu before heading to Nkhata Bay. Nkhata Bay is a small village on the Lake Malawi shores. We spent three relaxing days at Mayoka Lodge eating, reading and staring at the Lake. I read Chitra Divakaruni's Arranged Marraige stories. This chic definitely does not like men, as almost every story the woman is the victim/hero and man is the culprit ! But, she does write good stories. Mayoka Village owners have built picturesque chalets constructed out of stone, bamboo and wood overlooking the bay. Gary, one of the owners of Mayoka, had a rambuctious birthday for himself and got the entire village to drink with him. At one point, he flashed on top of the bar ! We also met a bunch of Peace Corp ... read more

We travelled into Malawi over a couple of days and stayed in Chitimba on the Northern shores of Lake Malawi -the lake is vast and could be taken for an ocean. After a bartering session for some Malawian furniture (Mums expect a dining set to turn up in the next couple of months!) we headed down to Chinteche with a brief stop at Mzuzu to buy some dodgy Afrian threads for a fancy dress party the following night. The local rag market was a totally crazy experience. It was pretty hilarious for about 5 minutes and then got seriously full on - word of our visit had spread like wildfire and we were completely surrounded having the most hideous garmets ever created thrust in our faces, and some wandering hands in our pockets - cheeky blighters! ... read more

For the record dar es salam is I think the largest city in Tanzania. Not a disease. I am in Mzuzu right now, we came here again yesterday to catch the bus to Mbeya (another town in Tanzania) however that all went terribly wrong. First I'll comment on other things The intruder into our tent was in Cape Maclear. We had bad vibes about that place to begin with, and it didn't help when the fellow came into the tent. WE were sleeping. I head the zipper open. I thought oh, pauls got the shits again (NOT) but as I opened one I to make sure he wasn't letting any mozzies in, I noticed paul had become black, and about 15 years old. I looked at this fellow, he looked at me. I screamed GET OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... read more
