I don't usually write about the days where we spend hours on the road. The scenery is always beautiful, and the towns we pass through are full of things to look at, but a lot of our time on the truck is spent sleeping, reading, listening to music or waiting for our next toilet stop, so there's never enough going on to justify me writing anything. Each driving day is much the same as the last. That all changed today. I don't know what time it was when the brakes slammed on and bags, bottles of water and people all flew forward in the back of the truck. I pulled my headphones out, and a child's high pitched cries replaced my music. It wasn't a continuous, steady sort of crying, but lots of cries released in ... read more

It was another long day of driving yesterday to Chitimba, where we finally got our first glimpse of Lake Malawi, also known as Lake Nyasa. It's the eighth largest lake in the world, and home to countless species of fish. I'd love to see the biggest lake in the world, because this one was really impressive, to the point that at first I automatically thought that we were driving by the sea before I realised that, miles away, I could make out the faint outline of the far shore. Lake Malawi is a source of income for the locals, with many of them catching and selling fish from the lake or else catering to the tourism trade and offering snorkelling excursions to see the diverse underwater life that thrives there. The water is clean and warm, ... read more

In Africa, you need to be a little flexible to go from A to B....and to reach Congo DRC...you need to be even more flexible...and not to worry when it comes to air travel. Not many planes fly to and from Congo, but each year, at least one of them, or more simply don't make it. If you are anxious about flying...this is not for you, period! I was supposed to fly Bangkok-Addis Ababa-Lubumbashi...and instead, we ended touring Africa for a while. A plane had simply been stuck on the runway in Lubumbashi few minutes before we were supposed to land...and that was not a simple plane, just an cargo Antonov who burst 3 of his tyres trying to stop on the runway as it had overrun it....slightly. They couldn't moe the plane, because first the ... read more

Africa » Malawi » Southern » Blantyre February 3rd 2012

Heading down south to Blantyre we managed to hitch a lift with a couple of nice truck drivers. This was our only option since the three busses that were supposed to be passing by between 4-5pm arrived three hours later all completely packed with around 20 people standing in each. Well normally this would be fine for us but since it was going to be a 12 hour trip over night we thought better of this and gave up on our hope to go that night. We are not really sure if the busses are like this all the time but the fuel crisis (and every other crisis here in Malawi) has put too much pressure on car owners and they have no option but catch the public transport also. As well our impression of some ... read more

Hello everyone, I hope you are all well and that the dreaded month of January has not proved too difficult. Sorry it has been so long since my last post, Malawian internet is both rare and pretty expensive so doing blogs and such like can take a long time. In fact everything in Malawi takes time, I spent a whole day on buses just get to a working ATM machine. I am also sorry if I have not replied to any of your messages. I have read them now and will reply soon. You know I appreciate them so. My New Year got off to a bit of a disastrous start, I managed to pick up some sort of food poisoning so my New Years Celebrations were spent, alone, in bed, with a bucket of vomit ... read more

The nice description ‘Africa for beginners’ in the Lonely Planet book sounds great and of course you are expecting quite relaxed, friendly and a beautiful country, we were really looking forward to hit the road by backpack in an easy way this time. But when we finally arrived to this country and faced to extreme poverty, hassle which remained us a ‘light’ Kenya and remote capital city so we understood that our trip through Malawi won’t be so easy and it is nothing for beginners in our opinion. The situation is getting worse for every day and we are rushing though this country because you never know what it can happen in the short time of period. However we booked a bus ticket from Lusaka to Lilongwe and the boarding time was 4.30am. It was absolute ... read more

After an amazing 4 months, my time in Malawi has come to an end. It was incredibly sad to have to say goodbye to Malawi and all the animals at the centre and the wonderful friends I've made, but I promised them that I'll be back as soon as I can. Living in Malawi was such an incredible experience and I've learnt so much about so many things. I can't even begin to tell you all the things I've learnt, but I'll give you a brief insight: -Babies (in my case, animal babies) may be cute but they're a lot of work, especially when they're hungry or tired and throw temper tantrums. I'm definitely not ready for a baby of my own for quite a while! -It's difficult to be a minority and have to deal ... read more

I know you've all been waiting for this, so here it is - update number 3 on my amazing life in Africa! Life here has been incredibly busy, especially in the past month. There have been a lot of ups and downs but in general, I love life here so much that the downs have been manageable. There's a lot to say about the past couple of months, it's difficult to know where to start because I just want to explain about everything. There's been a whole new group of volunteers who have arrived since I last wrote, at one stage there were 10 of us here, which is the most we've ever had since I arrived. It was nice to have so many other people around but it did get pretty hectic taking turns with ... read more

This place is amazing! After 5 weeks of being here in Malawi, I'm still really loving it. I'm learning more and more about African life and everything is always so fascinating, even if it's really frustrating at the same time. Things generally happen pretty slowly here, which can be frustrating if you really need to get stuff done, but I find that I've adapted pretty well to “African time”. I walk and work a lot slower here than I do in Australia. And I'm hardly ever the person that everyone else is waiting for, which is a first in my life! I had to go to the immigration office a couple of weeks ago to renew my visa and it was the most frustrating, complicated process! It took me two hours just to get a stamp ... read more

Hello from Malawi! Muli bwanji? (This is where you answer “Ndili bwino, kaya inu?). This phrase was my first in Chichewa (the national language of Malawi) and definitely the most important phrase to know. It means “How are you?”, “I'm fine, and you?”. That's the standard greeting here so it's been very useful. After 3 weeks of living in Malawi, I have to say, I'm really happy here. It feels so right and so comfortable to be here and I'm so glad for that. I love everything about the place. I was expecting to be quite overwhelmed with Malawi for the first couple of weeks and experience some culture shock, but I haven't really been overwhelmed by much and definitely haven't had any culture shock. I feel like I've slotted into life here quite easily. Anyway, ... read more
