The opening photo just about sums up the day - lucky sightings all day. We opted for an early morning drive and late afternoon. We had been tempted by the hot air balloon flights but it was very expensive, rather cold and in the end we very glad we stayed on the ground. We started off by seeing elephant and all sorts of gazelle impala topi etc. Our first lions were sprawled out by the side of the road obviously having had a good meal last night or that morning. As they finally decided to amble off across the road the scavengers who had been waiting at a distance moved in . Jackal and vultures first, followed by the hyena who won the day for the bones as Tamsin's photo shows!! We had been watching ... read more

Early 7 am start as we had a six hour journey to get to the Masai Mara Game Reserve travelling through the Rift Valey. The vistas are vast and the sky plays a dominant role in the landscape. The loo stops consisted of never ending emporiums selling every conceivable shape of carved animal and tribal person backed up by amiable sales man who was your very best friend with a very good price! The road was straight and bumpy and we spotted the odd animal as we entered the Masai Mara region. As we passed through Narok the main Masai town you began to get a feeling for the people as well as the countryside. The herders and their flocks peppered the landscape from now on and their lean bodies silhouetted the horizon wrapped in ... read more

When we were told that it would cost 4000 Shillings per person (or $42 USD/person) to visit the Masai village, Gene and I decided it was time to put our foot down. $84 US dollars seemed a very high price to pay when it cost us only $25 in total to visit the more developed villages of South Africa. Not surprised that even our guide would pretend this was a reasonable price to pay, Gene and I proclaimed to have no more than $42 in cash to our name and informed our guide, Simon, that it would be a “take it or leave it” proposition. As we pulled up to the scanty Masai village, we were greeted by a young, well-spoken warrior who accepted our $42 without question. Expecting to visit a village at least half ... read more

Thanks to Parasar's relations with Emirates, I got hooked up with a discounted ticket to Nairobi, via Calcutta and Dubai. :) Just when I was starting to get a fondness for trains, busses and bumpy roads... I wasn't planning on coming to Africa but ended up coming here on a whim. Actually, what had happened was I came across an internet ad for a flight from Kathmandu to Nairobi... and i thought, "Hm... Nairobi...interesting...Why not?" So I guess internet ads do work, at least in an inspirational sense. It took me a while to peel myself away from Nepal, but after bumming around, drinking, dancing, partying for a week and a half, post-wedding, I knew it was just a matter of time (self-control?) before I had to bid farewell to all this fun. I found ... read more

...is about $500 per day. We wouldn't know this though until it was all said and done. Coming off the high of our days at Djuma in South Africa, Gina and I couldn't wait to continue our journey at the Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya. In fact, I felt so confident that Kenya would simply be an extension of our time in South Africa, I told Gina that she had nothing to cry about as our twin prop plane lifted from the dirt runway in Kruger, while Chris, Abraham and a herd of giraffes looked on. Seven hours and three planes later, we found ourselves at the antiquated airport in Nairobi. Having been warned about the various maladies and cons that plague Kenyan society, we became instantly suspicious of everyone. Had the immigration officer not ... read more

Well our journey in Africa begins...... The first day of our tour started with a long and very bumpy journey to the Masai Mara National Park. We travelled throught the Great Rift Valley and the scenery was spectacular! We went on our first game drive into the Masai Mara and were lucky enough to spot 3 of the "Big 5" - Elephant, Buffalo and Lions (which included a pride with three cubs!) We also saw zebra, gazelles, giraffes, warthogs and many more. Following this we went into a traditional Masai village to learn how the locals live. It was fascinating to learn that their stable diet consists of milk, blood and meat from cows! The men have many wifes and the going rate for a wife is ten cows - so my dad could have quite ... read more
