So we did the whole Tiwi shiz, which wascool again, nice to sweet b-all for a weekend again, chill out before the breakdown in da Mara. If you cant be bothered to read about boring boring mombasa theres capitals where my safari begins! We had a gander down the beach, i ended up buying two Ciqoys(defintely not right spelling) which are basically the thin towelly things loads of people wear. They are cool anyway, basically they are sarongs. So its midnight and I'm talking with the Maasai warrior outside my tent (don't all good stories start that way?)... Seriously...He's the camp askari or security and I feel safe from the predators and hyenas and charging rhinos because he showed me his bow and arrow, his poison, his small sword, and his rungu or heavy wooden club. Evidently Maasai men are known around here as fierce warriors. They seem so graceful and mild-mannered but I guess they pack a wallop. This Maasai was nice and we chatted a bit but we mostly just looked up at the vast milky way above. There wasn't a city for a 100 miles so the night-sky was crystal clear. The half-moon was inching its way upwards. Gorgeous. Then he went for the midnight special: he offered to sell me ... read more

Fi chose to skip the final early morning game drive, but I went out with Simon to see if we could find a leopard. No luck there, but we did see a cheetah with a kill, as well as a pair of lions who had killed a baby hippo. We both felt pretty sad when it came time to say our goodbyes to the staff. They had all been so friendly and helpful, it was almost like staying with friends. We were both pretty quiet on the drive out to the airstrip. I guess we were reflecting on what a great time we’d had, together with the experience of getting married. The flight back from the Mara was uneventful. David, Terry and Jo’s driver met us at Wilson airport with the rest of our luggage and ... read more

We had a bit of a lie-in this morning and rose to find that the staff had set-up breakfast on our veranda and there was a chef waiting to cook us breakfast. It was absolutely chucking it down again, so we were glad we didn’t go out. We got ready and went to reception for the 10.30am game drive, only to find that Patrick was saying that it was too wet to go out and that vehicles were getting stuck left, right and centre. We consoled ourselves with a farewell drink with Mark and Paula, only for them to be bustled onto a 4x4 half way through, because their plane was about to land. The afternoon game drive was a bit strange without them. In fact, there were only six of us left in total in ... read more

Today’s the big day. I was up at 6am for the morning game drive, while Fi decided to have a lie-in. We went to a different part of the Mara this morning, south along the Mara river towards the Serena. We saw a large herd of elephant, a big pride of Spotted Hyena, a very large crocodile and the paradise pride loafing around on some rocks. I got back to find Fi was up and ready for breakfast. We were both getting pretty nervous by now, in fact, I think that if there weren’t armed guards surrounding the camp, she might have been tempted to make a break for it. We went to meet the priest, Farther Francis Thumbi. He was brilliant, and said that we could have whatever type of ceremony we wanted. We said ... read more

We were woken up at 6am with tea and biscuits for our first early morning game drive. We saw a large herd of elephants, more lions and a male cheetah. No sign of leopard yet, but we’re hopeful. After breakfast we got Simon to drive us out to the airstrip to meet Mark and Paula’s airplane. We said hi and let them go off to freshen up while we went on a short game drive. We’re getting some great photos of the wildlife, you can get unbelievably close (sometimes too close). We met Mark and Paula for lunch before meeting up with Patrick the camp manager, to discuss the details of the wedding. We went out to see the spot they were suggesting - a cleared area on top of a small cliff with the bush ... read more

Hi there, Well, we just got back from our day around Cairo. Wow. Wow. Wow. Ooops......sorry.......I had promised myself I would find another word or two to use because you are probably getting tired of WOW. Ok, how about, beautiful, eye-opening, amazing, incredible, ageless reality, dusty, smog galore, lots of people, fantastic, surreal! Anyway, what a day! We have some quiet time now and I want to finish up the blog on Kenya. I promised you a part on our visit to the Masai Mara village. So here goes. The tour group broke up into 3 different sections and headed to different villages (so we wouldn't overwhelm the people). We arrived and Benson was our "village guide". He was quite proficient in English and most gentle and understanding with our questions. It cost each of us ... read more

Good morning, everyone! Well, before I head to breakfast, I will fill you in on another African adventure......the hot air balloon ride! Another "first" for me, and I will admit that, once again, my heart was pounding. But, as Tina and I have decided on this journey, we will "feel the fear and do it anyway!". We signed up for the ride, along with 15 others in our group. There are 2 large balloons and Peter, our pilot, is from Texas originally. He lived in Pasadena, Calif. when he got a job offer in Africa and, in his words: "I haven't worked a day since!". He loves it here. Has been doing this for 12 years. He has room and board at the Lodge, makes $2,000US/month and gets 2 months off each year at which time ... read more

Hi everyone, I think this is the part many of the young people have been waiting to see! And it was magical!!!!! I'll keep the note short for now as it is getting late and I am tired. I will add more detail tomorrow when I send Part 4 of Kenya, which included a special visit to a village in Masai Mara and my hot air balloon ride. What an eye-opener and what an adventure! So, we arrived in Masai Mara, and booked into the Keekorok Lodge where we stayed for 2 nights. It was a long drive and there were challenges when we arrived at the Lodge. I will say that Carl, our senior Tour Guide, is superb! He handled things very well and very professionally (the Lodge had double-booked and many of our people ... read more

Up early for the plane to the Masai Mara this morning. It’s being throwing it down all night and the morning brought more of the same. Terry drove us through the deluge to Wilson airport. We made a dash across the tarmac to the 8 seater Cesna that would whisk us off to the Mara. The flight was only 45 minutes and despite the poor weather, it wasn’t too rough. By the time we landed the rain had stopped and the sun was even threatening to make an appearance. Our guide and driver, Simon, was there at the airstrip to meet us and transport us to Governors Il Moran camp. The camp itself is very small, only ten tents. It’s separate to the other Governors camps and each of the tents overlooks the Mara river. We ... read more
