How it all started..... Four months ago we took an exciting two week holiday to Egypt. This got the toes twitching and the feet itching. We had a taste for Africa and the seed had been planted. Little did we know that we would soon be chucking it all in for another adventure of a life time. With approximately 8 months worth of budget and a rough itinerary including Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rawanda, Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique we had the roots of our adventure planned. Narobi When we first arrived in Nairobi at 5am Sunday morning you could be mistaken for thinking it was a ghost town. The roads were entirely empty as our taxi hastily drove us along the long wide roads with the exception of a few other cars speeding along here or there. ... read more

After going to the barbers for a shave in Cairo which felt enormously civilsed I quickly packed my stuff (except my plug adapter which has been forgotten but would have been packed if retrospective packing had been invented) and headed in my last Lada trip to the airport. At this point I'd like to say thanks to Tom and Andrea for a most excellent time in Cairo, as I think I've seen the best of a place which many tourists have come off on the wrong side of. I had the great privilege on an overnight flight to Nairobi stopping off in Khartoum thus preventing any sleep, although this was outweighed by two meals. I arrived in Nairobi at 7 in the morning where my airport transfer to the backpackers hostel was disappointingly absent. However, ... read more

Well folks is official Maughan has sold me a to a boda driver (motorcycle taxi driver) for $20,000 USD and a small plot on the Nile. I tried to barter in a few goats and a giraffe but he wasnt havent it. I dont know his name because he didnt think that was important but he has graciously taken us twice on his bike without making us pay a mazungo (white person's) prices.... Although this is very true he didnt realize that I had no intention of living in Kampala to be his not first but second wife so he opted for the opportunity to ask me if I would take his first born daughter to Canada to get her a better education... all expenses on me of course.. ha ha Another week another journey… Overwhelmed ... read more

February 8 2010: On the way between Mombasa and Nairobi, we passed an area where baobab trees grow. They're primal; their bark made me think of an elephant's skin...and they are enormous. Their branches look like roots, as if the tree must have grown upside down. We weren't in Nairobi long before we traveled through Machakos to Masii (pronounced Ma-see) where Paul's shamba is located (actually we visited three of them; one with the house where we stayed). One day we traveled to one higher up the mountains and walked in to it. Mazee led us up and through fields and then we skirted around to the shamba of Paul's uncle. The buildings were mud over whattle; simple and beautiful. The setting was extraordinary, the farmland lush and productive. Very nice people! We stayed and chatted ... read more

Hi have now been in Kenya for a month working in a school which has been really hard manual work and I have found muscles I never knew I had but very rewarding and the people are just wonderful. I have added some more photos but I have so many that it is nearly impossible to choose which ones so just a random lot and not in any order either- all these things take so long and I don't get a lot of internet access so just have to go with it when I can. Having a brilliant time still and am off to India tomorrow for another adventure - hopefully can give my arm muscles a bit of a rest. Guess what can't upload my photos on this computer!!! SORRY ... read more

Just a quick one today to let you know that there are now photos for all of the posts that have had them missing. I have found a good quick net connection and have spent the day, and quite a few Kenyan Shillings, uploading. Things should now be up to date and I trust that it will prove to those who wonder that we are all still kicking on. We are currently in Nairobi and have been here for the last 5 days. Most of the time we spent in the Indaba Camp which is a little out of town on the way to Karen - a pretty flash part of town if the shopping centre is anything to go by. It was a very relaxing time in the camp and we needed a bit of ... read more

It is now a little over half way through our trip from Cairo to Capetown. We have a 5 day layover in Nairobi and it looks like we have found a nice, relaxing place to chill out for a while. The trip so far has not been hectic. Constant is probably a better word. Up most mornings at or around dawn and into it. Some days it is just half a day travel and others are full, hard days. We have only had to camp in the dark once. Most of the camp are so tired that they are in bed a little after 9.00pm at night, although there are a few of us who are capable of going a little later. From Nairobi the group will change dramatically. 8 people are leaving and I think ... read more

It's our last day in Nairobi - for now at least. It's somewhat embarrassing that we spent four days in Nairobi without once venturing into the city centre, except as a transit point on our final day, in order to catch a matatu south towards the Masai Mara. Our justification? We had a trip to plan! Hanging around the camp to attempt this exciting activity, we pretty quickly discovered that negotiating an itinerary is no easy task when faced with four months to spare and an infinite number of places to spend them! Africa is so vast, and the options so limitless, that settling on a decision as to what should be our first step was hard enough, let alone deciding on the general pathway for the whole trip, or the equipment we may or may ... read more

Happily, our friend Charlotte came calling at our tent at 09.50, thoughtfully making sure we didn't miss out on breakfast, which finished at 10. Charlotte had arrived from Kuala Lumpur the day before, and rendezvousing at the camp was as far as we had planned for the four month journey through Africa that we had agreed to embark on together! It was great to finally catch up after talking about taking this trip for so long and although we spent the day with the best of intentions for planning, with the guidebooks in front of us, we somehow kept finding ourselves on different topics... an easy thing to happen when it had been more than a year since we'd seen each other, and there had been quite a few adventures in between. All in all, it ... read more

As we ended one year and began a new one I started planning for all the new beginnings that are and will be happening. Our harvest has begun in our garden, giving us plenty of cabbage, carrots, corn, potatoes, kale, spinach and beans that we are able to happily donate to the orphanages. Even though the cabbage is a bit stinky I enjoy loading the back of my car and rejoice in the fact that I am over my nausea and can carry it to the orphanages without losing my lunch. Upon arrival at the orphanages the kids happily run to the car, each one with outstretched arms wanting their chance to carry some of the bounty. Our garage has turned into a clothing barn as people have given supplies for me to distribute to the ... read more
