January 27: Mom Today I walked the white sands of the Indian Ocean, which is as warm as a bath. I filled my pockets with what I think is coral and black and white shells to make earrings. It is 6:30 p.m. here. When I checked in the porter was showing me the switches and bar fridge in my room. When he opened the fridge he shut the door and said he needed a broom. As you can imagine, I was puzzled. He returned with another man and a stick and the proceeded to poke inside the fridge. The removed the fridge from the cabinet and poked some more. Dass Weihnachten dieses Jahr etwas anderes sein wird, war mir von vorne herein klar. Und so hatte ich auch wirklich ein paar schoene Tage, auch wenn es nicht besonders besinnlich und feierlich zuging. Am 24. waren wir noch in der letzten Minute Weihnachtsgeschenke einkaufen. Das ist vielleicht gar nichts so besonderes. Den halben Nachmittag haben wir damit verbracht uns zu ueberlegen, welches Buch, welchem Kind wohl gefallen koennte. Denn die 12 Waisenkinder haben von uns Lesestoff und Suessigkeiten bekommen. Die andere Haelfte des Nachmittags waren wir damit beschaeftigt diese Geschenke einzupacken. Melli und ich hatten unseren Spass dabei... Am Abend gab es dann fuer alle Reis und Fleisch. Dazu muss man sagen, dass die Kinder nur ganz selten Fleisch zu essen bekommen. Hellooo All. Billy and I left Nairobi quick smart on his arrival and I’ve been e-stranded ever since. I’m getting used to it, but it is odd not being just a click away from you lot! I miss it. But instead I’ve been up to all sorts. It might sound a bit disjointed as I’ve written bits at different times. So first, on leaving for safari in Masai Mara, our van was empty save for our guide Tobias and his friend Ken, but it seemed like we were all relieved to hit the road. That is, until we stopped at the office where I was instructed to go to the 6th floor with a bunch of cash (1000KSh is the biggest note - worth about £8.50) to pay our balance for the trip. So since my last blog, we have been on a safari & it was something we will both remember forever. I would recommend doing it to anyone - seeing animals in their natural surroundings is just breath-taking! We booked through a contact Moses had - a happy chap called Titus who gave us a great offer. We also shopped around but no one could guarantee us our own private vehicle which Titus said he would & the prices varied so much & they want you to barter with them - all rather impersonal to be honest. So we felt happy with Titus, & he sat down with us to discuss every tiny detail as he was going to be our actual guide/driver. Hiya! Time has been flying & I am sorry it has been soooo long since my last update! I've been REALLY busy sorting out the final finishing touches at Hill Wheeler School, ready for the official opening that was celebrated this afternoon! So, since the last blog, Aaron has arrived here in Kenya! A convoy of myself, Moses, Keegan & Loice (& some of my luggage) went to collect him early last Saturday morning. His flight landed at around 9.30am, so we were up early - even though the airport is only half an hour away, with the morning traffic it takes about an hour.
