This is our grand accomidations!

Welcome to Ghana!

We have made it! After an exhausting 21 plus hours of near sleepless travel we arrived in the tropical heat of Africa. We made out way through customs without problems and were in the good hands of Kirt and Hilda in no time! Before we knew it we were sipping minerals (soda) out on the padio of our hotel in Accra, the capital of Ghana.

Our first breakfast was eggs, toast, juice (fresh), oatmeal, tea, and coffie (well ok nescafe, but that as close as we will get for a while). Kirt and Hildas Toyota Land Rover took us on our our long journey to Kukuturmri, Hilda's home town. Constant memories of traveling in Nepal stimluate my memory as we see more and more.

The ride was amazing. We drove through the coastal plains and up into the low mountains. We passed many small villages, some still made of mud and thatched roofed huts. We also passed many types of trees: mango, bannana, plantain, papaya, coconut, and boaboa (the large truck trees that are often an icon of Africa). One stop was to pick up some localy made mango honey! As you can see

we are eating well!

The view from the mountain ridge top was very humbeling. The vista of palm trees and hill sides dotted with small villages was great. We made it to Kukuturantumi at last and saw what is to be our new home for a while. It is a good sized building that makes a sqare compound. Hildas family lives in a building on one side, the library makes up one side and the house makes up the other two sides. So the middle is complelty enclosed. Our room is large and well furnished. They even have hot water, a washing machine, TV, DVD (with pirated DVD's that have 5 movies per DVD), and even a type of satilite TV that gets 3 channels. So we are not roughing it to bad. There are plenty of goats, chickens, dogs, cats, lizards, and huge freaking spiders under our bed to remind us that we are indeed in Africa

The pictures can give you a little idea of the village around us. Obviously most people so not have this type of luxuryies. But everyone has been welcoming and very friendly. We ve even met the chief of the village

aleady. Our vocabulary is limited to hello, how are you, and thank you, but we are learning!

My time is nearly up, but wanted to begin our journal with a least a little glimse into are life here!

Resort Kukuturantumi
So the truth is you guys packed some backpacks to make it look like you were going to take some pioneer lewis and clark expedition through the rugged jungles of Africa... and there you are, living in what looks like a nicer apartment than mine (is that a persian rug on the floor?). I see what has happened here and the words "dupped" and "tricked" come to mind. looks like we need that water purifier stick here in Akron more than you'll need it there. ALso wondering why Ryan is in all the pics and wanting to know what you have done with Katelyn. still miss you. still very jealous. still waiting to hear more!
