Before I left for Ghana, one of my professors at Stanford told me that I HAD to visit the canopy walk at Kakum National Park (near Cape Coast) while I was here. So, with just a little over a week left and without any other Obrunis to go with (Zach left last week after getting malaria), I packed my bags and went to Cape Coast on Friday night with Davis, the guard from CDD. The trip there was relatively uneventful but, just as we were nearing Cape Coast, Davis turned to me for some money and I realized that he expected me to pay for his entire trip (ie he had NO money on him). In retrospect, I guess that was fair, considering that he was serving as my personal translator and guide for two days, ... read more

Heya everyone I'm back in Burkina now, but I promised a rundown of my holiday. So here it is! So I arrived in Accra on the 8th with no drama whatsoever, which was nice. Chantal was waiting for me at the airport, and we went directly to the house of our colleague who was nice enough to put us up. He's got this enormous but largely unfurnished house in Accra, and we gladly crashed on a couple of mattresses on the floor for free. :) Chantal had already been in town a few days, so she took me out to show me the town a bit. Taxis are super cheap there, about $2 so it's really convenient to get around. At some point we decided it would be fun to get hair extensions (see previous post) ... read more

Well today has been a full day to say the least. I never would have thought that vacationing could be so exhausting! We woke op early this morning to go to Kakum national Park and Animal Refuge. By getting there early we had hoped to see some of the monkeys but had no luck. While there we went on the world's highest rope bridge (and yes, I did say we). Definately one of the scariest things I have done. We were over 100 feet up on these walkways that connected 6 viewing platforms. As we climbed the hill to get to the first bridge I was actually excited...until I saw them. I crossed the first bridge smelling the roses and blowing out the candles. Our guide said it was very important to breathe so I took ... read more

Green Turtle Lodge is an amazing place to spend a relaxing weekend. Last Saturday and Sunday I spent lying on the beach in front of the ecolodge. It's about a 6 hour journey from Accra, which is quite acceptable for the end result. We caught an STC bus from Accra to Takoradi. Then from Takoradi we took tros through Agona junction and down to the Lodge, which is very close to the small town of Akwidaa. It was great just to spend a couple of days with nothing else to do but lay on the beach, swim in the waves and eat good food. There are day tours out of Green Turtle, however, the better ones tend to be quite expensive. For example, a tour of a village that is built on stilts above a river ... read more

Hello hello...I'm back! First, I just wanna apologize in advance for the heart attack that this entry in gonna give my parents...the trip to and from Takoradi was crazy and I'm gonna put all the details in so I don't forget (I'm sick of journaling). I left Accra for Takoradi on Monday and it was my first experience with STC (the grey-hound type busses that are supposed to be MUCH better that a tro-tro). I went to the station the night before my bus left to check the times and such so I could time it out to get to Takoradi by 12 to meet Gretchen at the station. I got a taxi EARLY that morning from Uncle Larry's Hostel and it was the oddest traxi ride to date. The driver kept seeing his friends and ... read more

The day of arrival was a great day - as was the day of departure. About the one and a half months spent inbetween, many different things can be told. And so I will tell you now. Leaving the squint-eyed borderpolice and his crony behind, the countryside turned cultivated, dotted with quaint small mudhouses and the sun was all smiling. So were the villagers we met as we trekked from the Black Volta River to the main highway between Lawra and Wa. We didn’t wait for long until a vehicle stopped. An expensive 4-wheel-drive with governmental officials picked us up, as they were on a mission collecting data on road-kills throughout the country. All explained to me in English - if a bit broken - still something I’d craved during the preceding six weeks of francophone ... read more

We arrived in Cape Coast yesterday morning and it was an experience getting here. We were hoping that Frank was going to be able to arrange a car for us to take but he got busy with Assembly business and couldn't work it out. About the only other affordable way here is to take a tro tro...and I'm glad I'm still alive. You have to show up at the tro tro station and the crack of dawn, you buy your ticket and sit in the "tro tro" or really crappy van until enough people have bought tickets to fill it up. We waited for about an hour...and you won't believe how many people they can fit into one van. It takes about two hours to get here but took us a lot longer because it would ... read more

I'm back in Ghana for a couple of days, so I've been staying up all day to go explore the city of Cape Coast a few hours away from where my boat is docked. Most of my fellow workers decided to forgo the exploring and adventuring in favour of all day boozing. Now normally I'd go join them, but it is not often I get to wander around Ghana. So I hailed my taxi driver from last entry and we took off down the highway at blistering speeds that had me wondering if he was not a professional race car driver at one point in time. At first it was raining hard as we approached Cape Coast, a downpour of epic proportions soaking everything and everyone. I sent a few curses towards the sky and like ... read more

Last night as I lay on top of my sheets, striped of everything except my boxers, I awoke in the middle of the night with to the most glorious sensation in the world: I was shivering! It was ever so faint and I was barely cold, but none-the-less, shivering! We're down at Cape Coast for a weekend break from the camp and I was enjoying the undescribable joy of sleeping under a working fan. The past week I had given up on the idea of even trying to remember what being cold felt like. Trying to get to sleep in our house in the camp is torture sometimes. No current (electricity) means no fan, and when there's no fan the air is dead still...not a breath. Usually as i lay in the feverish heat drifting in ... read more
