I'm still hanging around Takoradi, being completely and utterly lazy. Perhaps the meaning of life truly is having sand under your feet and giant fruit-based alcoholic drinks with funny straws? Tis a shame my sanctuary of sin shall be smashed into smithereens soon. (wow that is a lot of s-words). I have to head back out tomorrow and work to make gigantic corporations more bundles of cash that they do not need. How disappointing. However, all shall not be lost under the white warm sands, as I do believe soon I will be heading to Tema or Cape Coast! The days here have been long and demanding on my sandal clad feet. Trekking around various beaches, dancing with strangers and seeing the many sites of the local area are just some of the activities I've crammed ... read more

I'm in Ghana now, in a city called Takoradi. I think it is also called Sekondi as well, but I'm not 100% positive. Anyways it is a lively place and I'm glad to be relaxing! Feeling the sand between my toes and cold beer. Mmmm cold frosty beers on a beach with a view. Life is good! I haven't been here too long, so I have yet to explore the city in depth. I'm still *technically* working, but the boat I'm on is tied up at the port. I don't need to sleep much and I want to spend as much time possible being completely lazy and enjoying the beaches and sites. The people I have met are very helpful and even bouncy! Maybe it is because all I want to do is dance and have ... read more

so, had the highlight of the ghana section of the trip today. we're stationed in Cape Coast and payed too much to take a taxi 30 minutes inland to kakum national park and their rainforest canopy walk set up by mountain climbers from vancouver. we payed five bucks each for the canopy walk and then did the extra hike with all the medicinal properties of the plants talked about and then had to pay another 4 bucks, but it was so cool. very rainforesty, the whole drive there and actually most of the time i've been in ghana i've been shocked at how much it reminds me of the caribbean; the architecture, the climate, the birds, the plants so crazy. so we walked up one valley wall to get to the top point where the canopy ... read more

Sorry this one will have no pictures due to the card being sent home with Kirt and Hilda for safekeeping Moving On This will be our final blog entry for Ghana. Soon we will board a plane late in the night and will awake in a new country. Our last weeks here have still been full. We celebrated Katelyn's B-day in style with over 100 kids. We then headed down to the coast to check out the castles and forts that supported the slave trade. Today (April 4th) we will head out of Ghana and into the ancient lands of Egypt. Boti Falls The day began by loading 18 kids into two vehicles designed to carry twelve. Everyone came dressed in his or her Sunday best for the excursion. For many of them it will be ... read more

Today was the big day I was going to do something touristy! I didn't get up very early after getting into 'The Da Vinci Code' which I hadn't read before. After a quick lunch of egg sandwiches on the roof I jumped into a taxi for the 40km ride to Kakum National Park. I got there for pretty much the last walk of the day, flashed my student card for my discount and hung around the museum waiting for my guide. We had a good chat about our lives while walking up to the canopy walkway a couple of Canadians had built 11 years ago. It was just us two which was great because if I was going to see any wildlife it would be now since I knew when to shut the hell up was ... read more

The girls were heading east back to Accra and then the east coast and I was going back to Cape Coast to see the rainforest so our paths we together for a while. They dropped their bags of at my room to wake me up and pack while they hiked over to see the castle. They didn't get robbed either, stupid guidebook! I got my shit together, paid for my room and when they got back went and got a taxi. Nana was very sad to see us go, but I promised I'd see him again as I decided Busua would be a great place to see the eclipse in 2 weeks time. Even if it was cloudy you can't beat a nice beach, and surely it would be heaving with pretty tourists then! We got ... read more

I’ve become a little frustrated this week. It is impossible to do anything here without being asked for money. I went out yesterday to do some street photography and accomplished nothing. Every time I try to photograph stuff people insist that I must pay them. I would be broke in a day if I paid everybody that I wanted to photograph. It does not stop there either. I wanted to photograph a stand of tomatoes in the market and some guy runs up and asks me what I am doing and I tell him that I am taking a photograph. He wanted to know what for. I told him for myself. He said that I must pay to take a photograph of the tomatoes. I just walked off. I’ve met a couple of guys since I ... read more

I left Hans Cottage at 9 am. I am headed to Sammo Guest house. It is very close to town and about half as expensive, the beds are half as comfortable too! There is rooftop restaurant here with good meals, which are also half as much. It’s a decent place but nothing to brag about. I have a ceiling fan and which makes everything good. I've seen a lot of Europeans here. I guess this is the place that all travelers stay. Its cheap, clean and close to the city. I will not move anywhere else. I've paid for my entire stay up front to get the 10% discount. It cost me $113 or $6.64 per night. Not bad! I like it. I'm one floor below the rooftop restaurant and that makes getting my morning coffee ... read more

I am at Hans Cottage now. It is a beautiful place with all sorts of flowers and a pond. The restaurant overlooks the pond which has two large trees on two small islands. I went down for dinner and sat on the top floor to watch all of the birds that were flying around. There must be 300 small yellow birds living in the trees there. I was watching them fly down to the ground an pull out blades of grass measuring at least 1.5 feet. The one particular bird I was watching had been trying to weave the grass into his nest. I think he was adding a guest room. He was running into problems though. Another bird kept stealing the grass from him right after he began to push it into the nest. He ... read more

I have arrived in Cape Coast tonight (Sunday). Anthony dropped me off at the VEC guest house Sunday night because I wasn't sure how to get to Hans Cottage, the hotel that I had arranged to stay at while I was in Cape Coast. I have not had much time to have my clothes washed this past week since i have been traveling and not stayed anywhere long enough, so I am down to my last shirt socks and underwear. I arranged to have my clothes washed and finished by noon tomorrow. After I pack them I will be off to Hans Cottage.... read more
