PART 2: EGYPT There is soo much to talk about when it comes to Egypt. But here is the bottom line.. if we didn't do the top of the line tour that my mother setup, I would have NEVER wanted to go. We were truly taken care of, picked up from the airport, checked into our hotel, picked up for every flight, tour, ...etc. honestly babied thru Egypt but it was GREAT. We got picked up in Cairo in the evening, taken to a fancy hotel and got picked up super early the next morning for Luxor. Day 1: Karnak & Luxor Temple (Cruise) Day 2: Valley of The Queens, Temple of Ha-Gyp-suit, Valley of the Kings (Cruise) Day 3: Edfu Temple & Kom Ombo Temple (Cruise) Day 4: Aswan - Philae Temple, High Dam, Unfinished ... read more

Geo: 30.0982, 31.2461Flight leaves on time and despite our concerns at flying with Air Egypt everything is fine and we arrive in Cairo on schedule after decent food and a good sleep. About 2 hours on the ground here at an almost deserted airport and we catch our next flight to London Heathrow which once again was fine and on time.Unusually the immigration hall at Heathrow was empty and we were through in no time. Our bags arrived early as well and we were soon at the coach station where we had a 90 minute wait.Bus back to Gloucester and walk down the alley and home by 18:30. Tired !!!!... read more

First day in Cairo was cold and windy, slightly less chaotic then I expected with driving like Longsight (with lots more lanes) and smelling of dust and sheesha. Went to Cairo Tower, Cairo Zoo, Khan el Khalili market, and Tahrir Square. There's freedom in the air. People seem happy, free, and pleased to see tourists. At Tahrir Square they were selling flags and 25th Jan stickers. More tourist stuff today - camels, pyramids, perfumery, and Egyptian Museum. Stayed at Havana Hotel, Syria Street. Decent enough in an uninspiring bit of Cairo about 20 mins from centre. ... read more

Hey all!! Slept fine last night despite calls from the nearest minaret at half four and half seven!! We all got up early to meet with our driver and guide for Cairo, Mina. He was out of Cairo on holiday in Singapore when the protests in Egypt broke out and couldn't get back for a month!! However he was able to tell us a great deal. We first went to Cairo tower for panoramic views across the city, it was a bit smoggy but the Nile looked nice and the old fashioned houseboats which were moored alongside. We went to the zoo and ended up feeling up like the animals themselves as we attracted more attention from the locals- a big group of seven white people!! However everyone was very friendly and even in passing were ... read more

Hello from Africa/the Middle East!!! I arrived in Cairo international airport at 16:20 after a very smooth flight. Taxied in past the uncomfortable sight of a plane that had obviously skidded off the runway years ago- don't fly with Pharoh airlines!! I met an interesting guy on the way over who works as a security consultant on container ships through the Red Sea. I was met by a hotel representative at the airport which was great as I wouldn't have had a clue how to get my Egyptian visa without him, and had an hour long journey across Cairo with a man called Mahmoud. Saw a few sights along the way!! Survived Cairo traffic they have a very interesting system of getting where they went to go- lanes of traffic opening up where there wasn't lanes ... read more

Day 5 – Felucca Riding the Felucca from Aswan to Luxor was one of the things on our itinerary that stood out on our itinerary from the first time I looked at the trips website and the day still exceeded expectations. While the majority of our group ate breakfast at the hotel Amy, Adrian, Tash, Stacey and I set out to find snacks for the felucca and McDonald’s for breakfast. Not only did we find both but I also learned the McDonald’s on the Nile sells ham and breakfast sausages both made of pork, This was the very first time I have seen pork in Egypt anywhere as the country is 80% Muslim. Another significant effect of the countries strong Muslim background is the fact 5 times a day the call to prayer can be heard ... read more

**** I have been having internet problems so I can not put many pictures in this post. ************** I have been looking forward to going to the great pyramids since I started planning this trip, and since we were unable to go to the Cairo museum due to some protests in the area we got to spend extra time exploring the pyramids, sphinx and museam of a massive 4000 year old boat. We are incredibly lucky to be in Egypt at this time I feel very safe, the Weather but even though this is usually the busiest time of the year there are very few tourists anywhere. , The utter lack of tourists means we have no lineups, cheaper prices, and sometimes have even had an entire pyramid or tomb to ourselves. Unfortunately just as we ... read more

Our tour group was supposed to meet up at 4sam on saturday but do to the fact that almost our entire group was in town we meet up at 9am instead. I admit I was a little bit nervous to meet our tour group, I have never been on a trip like this and had no idea what to expect. Now that I am two days in I can safely say I am presently surprised. Our guide leader for the first 8 days is Hoda she is an Egyptoligist and has strudied Egpytion history at university for 6 years. She has so far been an incredible fountain of knowledge, guidance and patience. I can not imagine learning or experienceing all the amazing things we have over the last 48 hours without Hoda. As for the rest ... read more

This is just going to be a short posting as I am tired after 30+ hours of travel, what a long day full of hiccups but in the end I ended up in Cairo with my luggage a full hour before the curfew. I had no idea how massive Heathrow airport is I had about 30 minutes to get from one gate in terminal 5 to another it took a buss a tram and a lot of running \ fast walking and I barely made it,I have no idea how they managed to unload my luggage, sort it and get it on my Cairo plane so far away in such a short amount of time. The first thing I noticed in my cab ride from the airport to my hotel was all the ways Cairo reminded me ... read more

The Egyptian revolution of 2011 captivated the world, and proved to be a triumph for the people of this great nation. An overwhelming desire for freedom and liberty has culminated in extraordinary scenes in and around Tahrir square during the last month, as the former regime was driven from office by the will of the people. There are many wonderful experiences to be had in this world we share, but it's truly an honour to visit post revolutionary Egypt only weeks after unprecedented waves of humanity in Cairo and Alexandria made an emphatic statement of intent about their future. I greet you again, the lovely reader, as the Egyptian people make the necessary transition to free and fair elections, and look forward to a bright future as a democratic republic. At the same time I'm thrilled ... read more
