First Impressions...

‘I am God, the God of your father,’ he said. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt for I will make you a great nation there. I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. Genesis 46.3-4

Well, 30 odd hours after the journey began, I finally landed in Cairo, Egypt after connecting through Amman, Jordan. It was night time (10 pm) though it felt like 3pm to us so the hotel had dinner waiting for us at 11 pm 😊

The first impression is a pleasant surprise. The city is so busy and bustling with a strange and wonderful mix of modern and ancient influences-it’s as if the city is holding onto both extremes in a variety of ways: there are Coke billboards next to mosques and monuments next to McDonald’s; there are the very poor and the very rich; the donkey-drawn cart next to the new Mercedes-very interesting.

The traffic is incredible as Cairo is the 2nd largest city in the world-our guide estimates that the population is 2500 people/square km. The people are very friendly and kind and I feel quite safe; there are “tourism police” everywhere and we even have an officer escorting us throughout our time in Cairo.

My brain is just mush at this point so I will say “good night” and add more details later...just wanted to get you these first pictures and let you know I am safe and sound.

Blessings! Shannon
