Geo: -18.5421, 24.5105Safaris are perhaps the most overrated tourist activity you'll find in Africa, over-romanticized through film and television. Scores of tourists packed onto open-top jeeps, oohing and aahing at every little bird and insect, giddy like schoolgirls, as they frantically attempt to cross off each of the Big Five off their lists - lions, elephants, Cape buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos. Snapping hundreds and hundreds of pictures of the most insignificant little things, and returning home to torture their friends with slide show after slide show. Not even being a fan of the zoo, I couldn't imagine how anyone could do a safari for weeks at a time, let alone for a few days. But of course, a safari is an obligatory activity while in this part of Africa, almost a rite of passage, one of ... read more

In my previous post, I alluded to a list that I made as a young child with one hundred goals that I wanted to achieve before I die. To this day, I am still not sure where this list is- probably tucked away in a box somewhere in Florida with my parents :/ Nevertheless, I have no doubt that, in addition to seeing Victoria Falls, another one of my goals was to do a safari in East Africa. So, with two days left before I head back home for the holidays, I decided to cross the Zambia/Botswana border with Erin and Beth to get my first safari experience in Chobe National Park in northwestern Botswana. While the safaris of Botswana are not as renowned or popular as those in Kenya, they are still (from what I've ... read more

It's our last full day of our trip... we are both incredibly sad about that and do not want to go home at all :( We went to Botswana for an all day safari (both boating and driving) in Chobe... we crossed over to Namibia so have now visited 5 countries this trip. Lucky was our guide, and on the boat ride we came to the only place in the world where you can see 4 countries (4 corners): Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia. Botswana's main industries are beef, tourism, and mining. Because of the beef, we had to "clean" our shoes as we walked over the border. In the morning, we did a boat safari down the Chobe river. Botswana was on one side, Namibia on the other - they had a fight over the island ... read more

Kabale and Chobe National Park and River 22 & 23 August After leaving Livingstone at 7.30am after a hot breakfast at the restaurant, with our new group and new guides, we had to travel only 2 hours to the border to Botswana. The border crossing went smoothly even though our guides were not looking forward to it as past times the border crossing has taken 4 hours. Immediately after the border crossing, we crossed the mighty Chobe River by a short ferry ride. The ferry only fitted our truck and one other vehicle. The Chobe River flows into the Zambezi River and eventually flows out into the Ocean through Mozambique. What is interesting about this ferry crossing is that in the middle of the river is the joining of the Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe borders. ... read more

Tuesday August 28 We've just spent a most amazing two nights in the Okavango Delta. I loved, loved, loved it and the time spent in the mokoro is some of the most relaxing hours I've ever spent. Mekoro (plural of mokoro) are traditional boats carved out of a single tree. Ours were of the less traditional kind (fibreglass) that are more common these days but I did see a couple of wooden ones, lined with hay. They each came equipped with a 'poler' who has a wooden pole four to five metres long and uses it to propel us through the water by pushing off the river bed and as a rudder to change direction. After a three hour trip that wasn't a race (though we were definitely racing), Denise and I arrived last to find ... read more

We left the Okovango on an 8 seater plane bound for Kasane, and then onto Chobe national park and the Chobe Safari Lodge on the 27th July. Flight was great with amazing views. When we got to Chobe Safari Lodge we were greeted by some very grumpy receptionists and we thought that this was just a one of thing, but we were wrong. We then went to the activities centre to organise our trips and they were even less interested in us!!! You cant complain about the service at Chobe Safari lodge because there isnt any!!!! The place is clean and tidy and the food is very good, but the service with a smile is non existent for most people we came into contact with. Our room was one of the little chalet type things that ... read more

We left our backpackers place at 7:00 to drive to the Botswana border. It was about a 45 minute drive. After the Zambian exit visa, a short boat trip to cross the Chobe River and a Botswana entry visa, we had a 10 minute drive to the park entrance and breakfast. Botswana has over 120,000 Elephants and over half of them are in the Chobe NP. The morning was a launch trip on the Chobe River which is the border between Botswana and Namibia ... Namibia's Caprivi Strip to be precise. In fact, 4 countries meet pretty well at the same place - Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia and Botswana. The Chobe River becomes the Zambezi River at Victoria Falls. The wildlife come right to the water and many are resident on the islands in the river, during ... read more

Sad after leaving the Okavango Delta behind we continued east to a small town called Gweta. This was just a stop to break up the 600km drive to Chobe National Park. After 3 nights back in the tent and being so encased in dirt we made the extremely difficult decision to upgrade again to a lodge room for a minimal amount-- I know, I know being uncomfortable is all part of the experience blah blah blah!! After a few water related issues we were upgraded to a family room which thrilled us even more. It was at this lodge where the expression T.I.A (This Is Africa) truly began to take on its meaning. The hot water was run off a gas bottle so therefore it would scorch you, then freeze you until you had had enough ... read more
