Return to Nata. “Is this your underwear?” Anouk held up my red lacy French cut underwear up so I could see it from the front cabin. “Yep,” I had hung it up to dry and I guess the sway of the truck meant it was not staying up. “Put it on the dashboard,” Derick suggested. Sure, it would look real good next to the battered dog eared FHM. Makes him look like a real trucker. Leaving Maun behind, we drove ahead towards Nata camp. Botswana has this annoying love affair with barrier gates. Every ten miles a rusting barrier swings on the edge of a metal barrel and manned by uninterested Batwanas. There were no shortages of donkeys to evade and even a horse hopping across the road. Why did the horse hop across the road? ... read more

One thing I can say about this vacation, there was never a dull moment! Between the beauty of the sunsets, the glaze of the milky way, the sounds and sights of the animals, I had grown quite fond of Africa. I must warn you, that when you go to Africa, there is a part of Africa that never leaves your spirit, or so they say. I have come to believe that. As you all know, I have a great passion for the outdoors, animals, and travel, and to photograph nature, for me it is a labor of love. One of the surprises we encountered while at Linyanti Camp is Wild Dog! There is less than 4500 Wild Dog, and we saw a pack of 28 dogs! Other animals we saw were: Birds, Hippo, Elephant, Water Monitor, ... read more

I am thrilled to share my pictures with each of you and it makes my day a little bit special when I know everyone enjoys them. I am so grateful for the eyes that have been given to me to see the people, the animals, and the vast regions of Africa. I am so grateful for the ears in which I can hear the different sounds of birds and animals, as well as the laughter of children. I am so grateful to have the tongue in which I can speak of my experiences with great passion! To the northeast of the Okavango Delta are the Chobe and Linyanti Game Reserves. These areas are renowned for their predators and large concentrations of game, particularly elephant. Dereck and Beverly Joubert made the region famous in their National Geographic ... read more

We took a "puddle jumper" to Savuti Camp, it was a little over an hour & half flight! I'd say the plane was smaller than the Concorde, and slower than a Snail in a quick crawl. It was fun though, especially when we hit some turbulence. Our arrival at Savuti Camp was a little on the wet side as an afternoon shower developed. Yours truly, my lower lip began to extend out because in the back of my mind, were we going to have one of those Texas showers that can go on forever, or would we have a "quickie". My mind eased up about an hour later! Off we went for a late afternoon drive to see what "dangers" would lie ahead. As we were driving down a hill, we encountered a couple of frisky, ... read more

Driving from Victoria Falls in Zambabwe to Chobe National Park in Botswana involved 3 different van changes and 3 different drivers. It was the typical African border crossing. First, we were required to wipe our feet on a disenfectent covered mat to guard against the spread of Foot and Mouth disease. Then we stood in the two required lines on the Zimbabweian side. One line was to get our passport checked and to receive a slip of paper stamped with an entry permit. The other line was to have the stamped paper checked by the customs officer. Then once we walked acoss the border, Botswana did the exact same thing. We were the only passengers in the van and this gave us the opportunity to get 3 different perspectives of Africa, the political situations, and the ... read more

January 26, 2006 Our first day of the safari. The night before we spent re-packing our stuff, doing laundry and getting ready. We left the hostel at 8:30am, and headed on our way to Greater Kruger National Park. Our tour leader, Charlie, seems really nice and incredibly enthusiastic. She's full of energy and information! Our group seems really great...mostly Aussies, with two Kiwis, a Brit and an American. We're 18 in total, plus Charlie, Dzingi (our driver) and Heinrich, whose learning to be a guide. Heinrich is hilarious. He's pretty young, from Namibia, and is really enthusiastic. This is his very first trip, and he doesn't seem to know what's going on at all, but that doesn't stop him! The group itself is great, lots of really fun people, which is great. A horrible group would ... read more

I am in the northern Botswanan border town of Kasane, right on the Zambian border. Brilliant place. We are camping right on the Chobe river and our camp site is encircled with electric fences so as to keep lions and crocs out. Their is also a guard with a rifle walking around at night, oh so comforting! This morning was incredible, we went on a game drive in the Chobe National park. AMAZING! Absolutely stunning. We saw tons of elephants(literally), lions, buffalo, sable antelope, impala, a mother warthog with her cute babies, African fish eagles, hippos and of course crocs. There are 185 000 elephants in the park, so the vegetation is interesting with many of the trees just lying on the ground or simply dead from being eaten by all the elephants. We are going ... read more

Travelling north through the Chobe Forest we ventured into the National Park. On our game drive we saw big herds of elephants including a small orphan elephant and a 2 day old calf who had not yet learn't to use his trunk - bless! Also saw antelope, hippos, crocs and a tortoise. Crossed into Zimbabwe late in the day. ... read more

Across the border into Botswana and a short drive further on we arrived at the town of Maun, we were given a couple of hours to grap lunch and stock up on water and then onto the Thebe River Safari campsite. The campsite was on the banks of the Chobe River, surrounded by electric fencing in order to ward of inquisitive hippos. We set up our tents and had a lovely BBQ before hitting the sack ready for an early start. Up early we were loaded onto an open sided safari truck and went off on our Chobe game park safari. We must have been spoilt in the Serengeti, Mara and Ngorongoro because Chobe was pants in comparison, those whose first safari it was really enjoyed it. Back to the campsite and a quick lunch was ... read more

We stopped at a wholesaler to spend our left over Zim dollars & stocked up the bar with red label Smirnoff vodka for less than US$2 a bottle & then set off for another border crossing into Botswana. When we got to the Katane campsite they said there was space & we drove down to pitch our tents. Unfortunately the only space was next to the Chobe river on paths made by crocs & hippos. As soon as the tents were up we rushed to the jetty passing grazing warthogs & playful banded mongooses & took a boat trip down the river. Chobe National Park isn't short of animals, from sun-basking crocodiles & mud-wallowing hippos to herds of elephants & buffalos, in every direction there was always something flying, swimming, feeding or peeing (as one elephant ... read more
