I would like to know if anyone has any ideas on how I can store my photos taken during trips.
I will be going to Vietnam in January for 6 fun-filled weeks. I would love to take my digital camera along since I can take photos and see how they look right then and there. Sadly, my camera can only store approximately 175 photos. I dont know if I can afford buying multiple memory cards and I really dont want to buy a whole bunch of rolls to develop later only to find out all of the pictures didnt show up.
Any ideas? I appreciate everyone's help. Thank you!
Reply to this Whe my 256 photo card is full, I take it to an Internet cafe and have them burn a cd. In Mexico it only costs me $3.20 per cd which is soooooo cheap! Then, I check them there to see if it worked, then delete all pix and have a blank card for continuing.
Reply to this Thank you so much for your suggestion! I think it is probably the best way. Thank you so much again!
Reply to this Yep - that's the best way - try to get a 512mb card though - that way you fill most of the CD before having to burn a copy.
Reply to this One small piece of advice would be to perhaps make a 2nd copy on cd and mail it home also. That way if the first cd gets damaged on your trip, you still won't lose your precious pictures. Cd's are surprisingly fragile in a travelling environment.
I didn't have a CD case, and instead kept my cd's inside a book. They survived okay.
I would grab a second battery for your camera as well, I kicked myself a few times for now having one and then having to sightsee without the ability to take pictures when my battery died.
Reply to this I just recently learned that their is a method of taking pictures from a your digital card and transferring them directly to your Ipod (has to be one that supports pictures). Im not to sure of the details but im sure if you ask someone at apple they will be able to fill you in.
Reply to this I traveled for two months and burned my pictures onto cds. Carrying them in my backpack wasn't a problem at all (usually they give you a cd case) but I have heard of other people mailing them home to themselves. Internet cafes and pharmacies almost always charged less to burn a cd than photo stores. If you bring more than one memory chip usually they can burn the two or more onto one cd, it depends on the amount of memory to be burned (cds can hold a lot!). I agree with these guys- bring rechargable batteries! Its a huge pain to have to keep buying overpriced batteries from tourist stands outside big attractions. Lithium batteries worked great for me also. They last up to 10 times as long as regular batteries.
Reply to this You could use an online safe (google it). It's not free sadly, but it's cheaper (and alot easier) than buying memory cards or CDs at £14.99 (think that's about $8) for 6 months and you can store all your photos online so you don't have to carry them all. It's also good for storing travel document details like your passport.
Enjoy Vietnam!
Reply to this Totally disagree - uploading photos from on the road to a website/ftp or whatever is totally unpractical. A 512mb card could easily take over twenty four hours to upload... work out the cost of that and the hassle.
Burn two copies of a cd - send one home - best and most effective approach.
Use a portable hard drive or laptop - best approach for those that have highend equipment.
Reply to this I have a camera connector for my Ipod Video and use it as both an mp3 player and a portable hard drive to back up my pics and vids from my camera.
Reply to this It's a good option - the ipod is very popular and the 60gb version has plenty of space... but there is some extremely good competition as well. A few to look at: Archos, Creative Zen Vision (only 30gb but with 640x480 screen) and there are numerous cheap PHD kits with built in card readers.
But if you already have an ipod... an adaptor is the best way.
I'd still recommend periodically mailing backups home though.... the ipod has to be one of the most stolen travel accessories...
